A Domain Name - Tips For Choosing One

By: John Hutchinson Click author's name for more of his/her articles

In recent years, buying and selling website domain names has become one more way for online entrepreneurs to make money on the Internet. These names are traded on online auction sites that also oversee the buying and selling of second-hand websites.

This way of doing things makes domain names exceptionally expensive. Names that contain the much sought after keywords can be traded for thousands of dollars.

It certainly pays to find a good name for your Internet business website.

While many experienced Internet marketers will try to combine two or three popular and relevant keywords to make a single domain name, others prefer to rely on the power of branding when they choose a name; that is, they would be more likely to use the name of their company, rather than keywords associated with its particular niche market. Celebrities, politicians, writers and artists use their own name as their brand name. Perhaps the most famous example of branding in the last couple of years would be the name barackobama.com.

If you wish to start up a small online businss you need to work out what niche market you intend to market in. Then make a long list of possible keywords with the aim of making a keyword rich domain.

To help you make your list, use a free domain search website (you can use Google to find these) and enter your proposed names directly into the search browser to find out if they are available.

Here are two of the main advantages of using highly targeted keywords in your domain name:

1. When people see your domain name they will have a quick understanding of what it is that you are likely to be selling. Your customers should then be able to find you more easily.

2. Your site may get higher rankings with the search engines for the specific keywords you have used.

One more thing when choosing a domain name for a business site - make sure that you get the .com extension. In general terms, domains that end in .com rest more easily on the eye as well as imparting a much more businesslike image. However, if your business is focused on a single country then you might want to use .co.uk, .co.jp etc.

If the domain name you want has been bought by somebody else, you may be able to purchase it from them on one of the auction sites. You see, there are people whose sole purpose when obtaining domain names is to make money by reselling them when they become sought after. However, you can expect that a domain name that is loaded with high ranking keywords will not sell cheaply.

Buying a top domain name on an Internet auction will cost you hundreds of dollars. If you can use your imagination you may be able to find a great domain name for your website that nobody has thought of before, and register it for just a few dollars with one of the many online domain name registration services.

I hope that this information will help you when choosing a domain name.

Good luck
