There is no standard except that of profit. There is no other country in the world where they speak about what a man is worth in dollars. In other countries they live to enjoy life; here they exist for business." A Boston merchant corroborated this statement by saying he was anxious all day about making money, and worried all night for fear he should lose what he had made. "In the United States," a distinguished traveler once said, "there is comfort everywhere, but no joy. The ambition of getting more and fretting over what is lost absorb life."

"Every man we meet looks as if he'd gone out to borrow trouble, with plenty of it on hand," said a French lady, upon arriving in New York City.

"The Americans are the best-fed, the best-dressed, and the best-housed people in the world," says another traveler, "but they are the most anxious; they hug possible calamity to their breasts."

We are raised to believe that we live in the land of the free but listen to what this visitor to the United Sates sees when he looks into our faces; "I question if care and doubt ever wrote their names so legibly on the faces of any other population," says Emerson; "old age begins in the nursery."

Wow, how quickly we Americans exhaust life! With extreme haste we pursue most everything! Every person you meet seems to be late for an appointment. The word “Hurry” is stamped in the wrinkles of our national face. We Americans are people of action; we go faster and faster as the years go by, speeding our bodies and very lives to the utmost. We work so hard that we become bent over with burdens. We prematurely grow gray hair. Most of us are restless and discontent. It’s highly characteristic of this particular time in life. We earn our bread, but hardly have the time to digest it.

I am sure we can agree that this is fatal to businessmen and women, it is not the actual work that is killing people, and it is the worry. Work is healthy but worry is like rust upon a blade. It grows ever thicker, therefore becoming dull and unable to cut a clean edge.

For sure, this isn’t what most Americans work for in life and certainly not what we would like others to see when they first meet us. We positively need to find a way to reduce our stress levels so we can experience and then express more of the freedoms we DO have here in this country.
