Adventure Safaris - A Brief Outline

By: Jason Uvios

The word safari comes from Safar in Arabic, meaning travel or a journey. The way the word traveled from the Arabic to Swahili to present day English is a thrilling adventure. No wonder then that it is going to be an explosion of thrill and excitement when these two words, adventure and safari come together. And the biggest thrill and excitement in Adventure Safaris is an African Safari.

It is very difficult to pinpoint the exact appeal of Africa as the land of adventure and safaris, and at the same time not so difficult at all. The range of 'big games' and colorful 'migrations' that Africa offers is hard to find anywhere else. And it is absolutely impossible to be immune to the charms of Africa as the 'dark continent'. Consequently, the legend of African Safaris has grown.

However, the continent of Africa is vast enough to make one feel flummoxed about where to start. The best adventure safaris in Africa can be found in a handful of African countries. They are: Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, South Africa, Uganda, Namibia and Zimbabwe. These places have become famous over the centuries for their amazing flora and fauna and a rich local color. Adventure safaris, in any of these places, are a unique blend of the unlimited charm and the age-old mystique, which is Africa.

The Kenya Adventure safari would involve sightseeing of many a famous place. The Daphne Sheldrick Wildlife Foundation is THE place for baby rhinos and the legendary African Elephants. The Karen Blixen Museum, famously featured in "Out of Africa" is a composite of culture that is hard to miss. The Aberdares/Tree Hotel is also part of this safari itinerary. The romance of Africa comes alive with a night stay in this famous resort. Samburu / Shaba Games Reserve, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara Games reserve are other attractions.

Ngorongoro crater, Serengeti National Park and Lake Manyara National Park are the prominent attractions of the Tanzania Adventure Safari. Mt Kilimanjaro, of course is a place that requires as much time as one can afford.

Camping takes up a great deal of safari activity in Botswana. The Chobe River and the Okavango delta area are great camping sites. Moremi Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans Game reserve and the Central Kalahari Reserve are must sees. In fact, the Central Kalahari reserve is flocked by visitors for the famed Bushmen. Though the original nomadic style has disappeared, the language and culture is still intact.

North Luwanga National Park and Kasanka National Park are the two prominent places in Zambia, where interesting safaris take place.

Kruger National Park, Swaziland and Zululand are the most famous of attractions in a score of numerous others as far as South African adventure safari is concerned.

Gorilla trekking in the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, the Sossusvlei Wilderness camp and the Damaraland Camp in Namibia and canoeing on the Zambezi and the Victoria falls of Zimbabwe make up some of the most adventure of safari venues in Africa.
