Anorexia Treatments

There are several different types of anorexia treatment. A doctor may prescribe one of these or a combination, depending on what he thinks will work best for that person. Many people with anorexia nervosa are treated by their local doctor, but if they are very ill, or it is thought to be the best form of treatment for that particular sufferer, then they may have their treatment in a hospital or eating disorder clinic.

One anorexia treatment that is thought to be very effective, is cognitive behavior therapy. This type of treatment tries to work out the reasons that the patient has, for the way that they eat and tries to teach them new, healthier patterns of behavior, that will give them the ability to eat a normal, healthy diet.

Group therapy is a popular anorexia treatment as it not only enables the group to interact, support each other and share their personal coping strategies and triumphs, it also makes good sense for the health provider, as it is a very cost effective way to treat the condition.

Family therapy can also be a very effective anorexia treatment for a close knit family as it has a built in support network, not only for the sufferer but also for their family who are going through it with them. This can be a very important aspect, as it provides support for the immediate family.
Drug based anorexia treatment is usually in the form of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These "ssri's"prevents the "reuptake" of serotonin in the body and encourages more serotonin to be taken up by the nerves. These drugs are also used in the treatment of depression.
Whatever type of anorexia treatment is used, your doctor or health professional should be able to help you to get the best out of it, both for the benefit of the sufferer and their family, to help them to cope with the illness. It is a good idea to try to get as much information as possible on the illness, as this will make it easier to understand all of the options that are available and which may be the most suitable.

It is a struggle but with the right attitude it can be beaten and is constantly beaten by thousands of people every day. Rememeber every individual is different and each individual will need a tailored therapy to suit their specific illness. Having said this there are many common component therapies that also do well.
