Arthritis Remedies For Dogs

By: Steve Weber A Click author's name for more of his/her articles

Arthritis remedies for dogs are as varied as there are patients and symptoms. It is usually best to start with the least invasive methods to provide pain relief then it may or may not even be necessary to move to more extreme methods of treatment... i.e. the ones with side effects.
Prevention is often the best place to start with any health issue and arthritis is really no different. There are three basic things all pet owners need to accomplish to ensure for the overall health of their pets. These arthritis remedies for dogs become even more important as pets show the beginning signs of developing arthritis.
1. Diet - Make sure that your pet stays within the weight recommendations for his breed or size is probably the most important. Extra weight adds more wear and tear to the body. Over a period of time, joints suffer and are more likely to become injured. Extra weight also leads to more pain in those joints already infected with arthritis. Diet is also important for large breed puppies. Puppies allowed to grow too quickly can develop joint dysplasia. Pay special attention to ensure the puppy's diet is age and size appropriate so they don't grow too fast.
2. Exercise - Basic exercise is important for all dogs. Dogs by nature are very active and curious. When a dog shows signs of an injury or arthritis, continue with short walks but limit strenuous physical exercise until the pain subsides. Stay within the ability and comfort levels of your dog - low levels of exercise will help keep the joints more mobile and lubricated.
3. Rest - Allow your dog to rest so the joints are not overly stressed. Don't let your pet to over extend - jumping on or off beds, making quick turns and stops during play, etc. The key is not to restrict too much but ensuring he/she stays within their ability levels.
These few basic wellness tips and arthritis remedies for dogs are easy to perform and have absolutely no side effects. Liquid glucosamine supplements will also work to prevent injuries as well as rebuild / protect joints and cartilage once damaged by injury or arthritis -- Again with no side effects!
Your pet can still lead a long, productive, comfortable life even with arthritis...just be educated and informed about the best arthritis remedies for dogs. Always check with your vet to get the best medical advice for your specific circumstances. Please do your research on any suggested medications...over the counter medicines as well as prescriptions. Some side effects can be deadly!
