Automobile Windshield Repair Choices

Windshield repair can sometimes be tricky. It is important for you to check your options before deciding. You have to think of the cheapest yet best way to get it done. There are instances that D.I.Y.'s help but oftentimes you really have to rely on repair shops to do the job.
Do-it-yourself repairs
Do-it-yourself repairs are the cheapest option but if not done correctly, it may cost you more. If you plan to do it yourself, it is important to choose the best kits. Research or seek the advice of experts so you would not be sorry. There are two types of windshield repair kits. The first is the less expensive syringe-type. The kit includes a syringe and the resin, intended for one-time use only. It contains just enough resin to repair one chip. The second type is the more expensive bridge system that includes the resin's and a plastic bridge. This type can be used several times because it is refillable.
Do-it-yourself repairs are advisable to repair chips or pits of up to an inch in diameter only. Windshield repair kits are not intended for cracks, starred chips and spidering. It is important to know that repairs should be done as soon as possible since the resin cannot adhere to old cracks.
Shop repairs
When you decide to have your windshield repaired in a shop, make sure to get your money's worth. Before going to the next repair shop that you see, look around to know who gives you the best deal, not just in terms of the price but the quality as well. Since an all-around mechanic may not be as skilled in repairing glass, go to a shop that specializes in windshield repair and installation. You must also choose a shop that offers you a warranty, so if for example the crack continues to spread, you will be able to have your repair redone free of charge.
Some technicians might rip you off by suggesting a brand new windshield when in fact all you need is have the crack fixed, so make sure you examine the damage. A small crack of up to six inches long can definitely be repaired. Repairing the crack or chip rather than replacing the whole windshield especially when you can help it is best because it's safe and less expensive. In addition, you can maintain the factory seal of the windshield. Windshield repair can take no more than 30 minutes of labor. If it suspiciously takes longer, be careful because the technician might be tricking you.
If your vehicle really needs a windshield replacement, make sure to get high quality glass. Have it installed properly and choose a good adhesive because it is essential in windshield installation.
Remember that in windshield repair, it is important to act as soon as possible. When a single chip is left alone, it could spread to a crack or worse, you could end up having to replace the entire windshield. Also, whether you are doing it yourself or having it repaired in a shop, always inspect it so you can be sure that the damage is taken care of.
