Bad Breath Can Ruin Your Life

As teenagers most of us have two great personal health worries, zits and bad breath. Fortunately for most people once their hormones sort themselves out the problem of zits disappear. However for many people the problem of bad breath remains with them throughout their life.

It is one of those subjects that few of us will talk about. This is strange because most of us suffer from bad breath at some time or other during our life. Usually the cause can be traced to our life style, the food we eat, especially hot spicy foods such as curries, garlic or onions. Smoking and drinking alcohol can also leave both a bad taste and smell in your mouth.

This type of bad breath is not serious and can usually be resolved by taking one of the many proprietary branded products that are on the market today. The problem with most of these usually mint based solutions are that they do not cure the problem, they simply mask it. In most of these cases the cure is simply to avoid those items or products that leave a lingering smell on your breath.

Another cause of bad breath is the presence of anaerobic bacteria that is naturally present in your mouth. This bacteria plays a vital role in the digestion process but if allowed to build up can cause a bad odor on your breath. To prevent the excessive build up of anaerobic bacteria it is essential to undertake proper oral hygiene treatment.
Brushing and flossing on regular basis will deal with episodes of bad breath and providing that you maintain good oral hygiene they should not reoccur.

If having tried these simple cures you find that the problem keeps returning then it is likely that there is another, possibly more serious cause. The most common cause of chronic bad breath or halitosis is some form of gum disease such as gingivitis. If you suspect that this is the case there s very little you can do about on your own. This calls for a visit to the dentist.

This should not be too alarming as your dentist will be able to treat your gum disease with medication. Even if you are one of those who have a fear of the dentist chair this is not something that you should put off. Gum disease if allowed to go untreated can lead
to pain, difficulty in eating and tooth lose. Not a pleasant prospect especially when it can be so easily avoided.

There are also social and career implications in not having a bad breath problem treated.
There is nothing more guaranteed to turn a potential partner off than a whiff of bad breath when you try to kiss them. It can also have career implications and could be a bar to promotion.

For the majority of us good dental hygiene, regular mouth washes and avoiding pungent foods will resolve problems of bad breath. If they do not then the next course of action is plain. Book an appointment with your dentist.
