Baseball Equipment Selections

By: Scott White

So, you would like to play baseball; well guess what? You are going to need some baseball equipment! Bats, gloves, helmets, balls; it is time to start some shopping!

How about we start with bats and begin the journey to a home run. The first thing to check on a bat is how long it should be. There is a general rule that says a bat, when placed on one end, should come up to your waist. With that in mind you now have somewhere to start. You also want to take into consideration the weight of the bat to make sure you have a good swing. If a bat is too heavy it might be hard to get a controlled swing. On the other hand, if a bat is too light it will have little effect on the ball. As you practice swinging the bat you should also pay attention to your grip; the bat should feel comfortable in your hands, you do not want to feel like you might drop it.

When you are batting you will need to wear a baseball helmet. This is very essential when stocking up on baseball equipment, you will be glad for this protection should a pitcher have an errant throw! Helmets, as you would expect, come in all sizes and colors. Picking one should be easy enough, just keep trying them on until you find one that you like. Make sure it is not too big as it might slip forward and block your eyes, that would make it hard to see that ball!

Another required piece of baseball equipment is a glove. At some point you will find yourself on the field, perhaps on one of the bases, or maybe you will be in the outfield. There are different gloves for different positions, however if you do not know where you will be playing there are gloves for that too. Gloves come in many colors and styles. There are different types of leather for gloves, as well as many different brands. While you are trying them on you will quickly notice what feels good on your hand. You want to be sure the glove is not too loose, but at the same time you should make sure it is not too tight; should you ever need to take it off in a hurry you do not want a tug of war on your hands. Literally!

Baseball is a very enjoyable sport. With the proper baseball equipment and some good friends you will be on your way to enjoying a favorite pastime!
