Be Memorable

By: Lynne Saarte

From trade shows to conferences to all sorts of little meetings here and there I have come into contact with a lot of people. Even on the streets I will sometimes have conversations start up with random strangers, and what all of these conversations end with is being handed a business card of some form or another.

Looking back on it now when I sort through all of those business cards there are two different primary reasons why I will remember who the person was I had been speaking to: the business card itself and the person who had handed it to me. If they made careful use of their business card printing the card they handed me will have an interesting design and all of their key information available.

But sometimes even this is not really enough to get me to remember exactly who the person was, because while they had a great card, they failed to make themselves memorable. They put too much of the load onto their business card, and because of it I am not exactly sure who it was that handed the card to me.

You have to be just as memorable as your business card if you want people to really remember you a year or more down the line. So how can you make yourself more memorable?

There are certain key things to be aware of when you start talking to someone you plan on eventually handing a card to. The first is to be clear and concise about yourself and the business you are promoting, and the second is to make sure you also talk about the other person.

The ultimate goal with this is to find a means of connecting yourself and your business to the needs of the person you are speaking with. This way you can point out to them exactly how you will be able to help them.

Now, when talking about yourself make sure that you talk equally about yourself as a person as you do about the business you are pushing. After all, you are selling yourself just as much as you are your business, and if you come across as an interesting person, they will be much more likely to remember you.

I hear so many businesses talked about I often find myself tuning it all out, especially if the person talking to me does not show any hint of personality. You have to be sure that this is not you.

Mention your family, the hobbies you have, and maybe you will get lucky enough to find a common interest. These are the kinds of things that business card printing alone simply cannot do for you, but can help make you all the more memorable if your card is just as good as your introduction to them.

Just be mindful of the fact that when you hand someone a business card, you are selling yourself just as much as you are your company.
