Thousands of you out there have most likely heard about all sorts of products that promise to restrict the aging process or at least correct some of the stuff that was done by disease and regrettable lifestyle choices. The info is pretty much unclear and very conflicting and it's difficult to know which information to trust. Some of these claims are wildly exaggerated, while some of the places on the internet are pretty much lies. It's important to educate yourself about the ingredients in these products, to see if there is any scientific research to back up the claims.

As an example, 2 products you have probably heard a lot about are acai berries and resveratrol. The best anti-aging products contain these, each of them seem to be the utmost in effectiveness. Let's start with berries. These berries are harvested from mature palm trees found in the rain forests of Brazil. Science has discovered that the pulp of the acai berry have anti-oxidant properties.

The same can be said of resveratrol, a compound derived from plants. Grapes, mulberries, raspberries have high amounts of it, as does the Japanese knotweed which is closely related to sorrel, buckwheat and rhubarb. Many of these things that have resveratrol inside them get the ingredient from Japanese knotweed (its scientific names, which can often be found listed in the ingredients, are Fallopia japonica or Polygonum cuspidatum). Discoveries from studies with resveratrol have been so positive that it has been granted orphan drug status by the FDA. The Office of Orphan Products Development was formed to help fund further research and development of products that look promising in the treatment of disease. You've probably heard that red wine contains resveratrol. This has been confirmed, although to obtain any therapeutic effects you would need to consume large amounts. It's very high - some estimates say you would need up to 200 glasses a day. But supplements in the form of pills can solve this problem. You should note, safe doses that one should take have yet to discovered, so it's not recommended that you take large amounts in the hopes of greater benefits.

Other substances shown to have antioxidant properties include coenzyme Q10, flavonoids such as quercitin (found in citrus fruits and onions) and epicatechin (found in tea and cocoa), and carotenoids (found in carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and collard greens).

What's an antioxidant? A quick answer is a molecule that prevents the nasty properties of free radicals. An unstable molecule is a free radical - one that contains an uneven number of electrons orbiting the atoms. These unstable molecules seeks to stabilize themselves by taking an electron from, for example, cells from internal organs with our own bodies. Eventually this process affects the cells, which can lead to illness and accelerated aging. Free radicals are produced naturally as part of the metabolic process in our bodies, but things like cigarette smoke and pollution can also help promote them. By taking supplements and eating foods rich in anti-oxidants, it's been shown that you really can slow down the process of aging and treat conditions such as heart disease and diabetes that shorten our lives.
