Using your blog to generate business leads isn't as simple as putting up a blog and waiting for the emails or calls to come in. There are several things you have to do to use your blog to bring in those leads, whether you are a consultant, manufacture a product, or need MLM leads. If you sell a service, getting leads from your blog may take a little more time because people aren't usually as quick to decide on a service provider as they are to decide on a product. For this reason, you want a constant stream of inquiries from your blog's readers so that you have numerous prospects in various stages of buyer readiness. If you've heard a sales person refer to their “sales funnel,” this is what they're talking about. The first step in getting solid leads is to get people to contact you, and usually you do this by offering them something of value in exchange for their contact information. A free white paper, a free e-book download, or a free newsletter are popular options. You should require a minimum of contact information before giving them the freebie - often just a first name and an e-mail address. But you should also provide an easily accessible contact form with your phone number for leads that are already “hot.” The second step in turning that inquiry into a promising lead is to follow up. Once you've delivered the free gift to an inquirer, follow up by email or phone. Don't worry: you don't have to think of the email or phone call as a cold call, because they have already expressed some interest. It's a good opportunity for you to gauge the person's seriousness. If you find they're serious, then congratulations: you have yourself a lead. Your business leads are like a garden. If you tend to them well, giving them enough attention without overdoing it, they'll remain healthy. If you ignore them altogether, or hound them mercilessly, they will wither away. Keep your contact information in a spreadsheet or a simple database and use it to ensure that you regularly communicate with your leads. You can do this by periodically sending along news or timely information, or perhaps offering them a low-cost introductory service. Of course, you won't get any leads from your blog if you let your blog languish. To keep getting visitors, you must regularly and consistently put up fresh content. Blog posts don't have to be long, and in fact, you should keep them shorter than 500 words. But if you never update, you'll stop getting traffic, and no traffic means no leads. Your blog doesn't have to be one of the big, blockbuster blogs to get enough traffic for bringing you sales leads. With simple search engine optimization and regular infusions of content, you can easily get enough traffic to make your blog a promising pipeline of new leads for your business.
