Catering – An Exciting Career on the Rise

If you are passionate about food, enjoy working in large groups and overseeing preparations and plans and have a flair for the perfect presentation of food, then you might enjoy a job in the exciting vocation of Catering; this job is presently on the rise in popularity. The food service and hospitality industries are a couple of the world’s fastest growing employment industries. There are many types of jobs available in the food industry and there are a number of employment opportunities within catering; most of the positions require that you have some form of culinary training or experience. All that is needed for this position is a High School diploma or equivalent certificate and a lot of prior experience in the industry. The amount of experience you need as a minimum is about two years as a supervisor and five years in a related food service role in the industry.

A Catering Manager is the person responsible for all of the aspects of the catered events. The catering manager will do the hiring, training and scheduling of staff members and they will work with the clients to arrange all of the catering details. They are also involved in the setting-up and tearing-down of the events that are catered as well as menu and cost development. They must deal with customer service and also pricing and billing. Usually all that is required is a high school degree or equivalent certification and at least two years of on-the-job, in-the-industry experience in a role which had supervision duties.

For working with large companies (Fortune 500 companies), organizations, airlines, cruise lines and organizations, A Group Sales Manager is the go-to person. This position requires a great deal of multitasking and working under pressure. This position typically requires the person to hold a degree from a four-year college in business and also have a minimum of five years of experience in the industry.

The Private Event Director is the person responsible for selling, planning and coordinating all the aspects involved in private functions and events. This person’s duties will typically include the menu planning and working with the clients and staff members directly. For this position, you should be very good at multi-tasking, meeting deadlines and be great at dealing with the public and have excellent communication skills. In addition to a minimum of two years of related experience, the education requirement is a two-year Bachelor’s degree in communication and public relations.

In order to land this job, you'll need a two-year Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years experience in food service or hospitality.
