Cheap Phone Cards - How Did We Live Without Them?

It is not that many years in the past that we would pick up the telephone, dial our buddy, relation or loved one on the other part of the globe, chatted for what appeared like hours and hours, and when we completed the phone call we were content.

A number of weeks soon after the telephone statement would turn up, you would open the letter, see the international phone call charges, and just about manage to slither to the telephone to dial the emergency services before you passed out!!

Then our community store would begin stocking phone cards. We would purchase them having no clue of all the costs involved, but we did not worry, they were a lot cheaper than phoning directly, although they never appeared to survive as long as what was advertised.

Now these days we have the web with free of charge calls from Pc to Pc with the likes of Yahoo messenger, MSN, Skype, and many others. This saves us a lot of money compared with the old days. And if the person on the other end did not have a computer, no problem we could still utilize VOIP (Voice Over IP) to make contact with landlines and mobile phones using Skype, and other services. They charged for this, but it was still economical, extremely low-cost.

Now we do not even require a computer for VOIP, some mobile phone services now have Skype as part of the service so we now have mobile phone to mobile phone anywhere in the world, with on the whole country to country costs being extremely small.

However selected countries are still quite costly, take the UK-Philippines, using a BT landline would cost you about $0.60/min, using Skype it still costs $0.24/min (it used to be $0.16/min but Skype put the prices up). The motive for these high charges is not Skypes fault; the countries in question charge a lot for providing the services. Whereas UK-USA is simply $0.02/min.

All is not gone those for folk involved with high rates even on VOIP, we now have access to sites that market many phone cards, and I have come across prices as small as $0.07c/min for UK-Philippines. Amazing!

All phone card services you obtain on the web use VOIP, so quality may perhaps not be as nice as landline to landline, but if you get a crap line, simply call back.

Specific phone cards are better for particular countries, while others are totally international. One factor you need to be aware of when purchasing online cheap phone cards is that you could have additional charges, so you need to verify what they are, but most sites supply complete details of these.

For instance a $10 card may perhaps say $0.09/min, but it may perhaps have a service charge of $0.89/week, that is they will remove that amount from your credit every week while the card is active. Some have every day charges of say $0.30/day; others carry no service charge at all.

You could also be charged depending on which connection phone number you apply. If you use the free phone number your outlay per minute will be to some extent higher, if you use the ordinary number, you may still be charged a local call rate with your regular phone company.

Regardless of these additional costs, you will discover online cheap phone cards are still the cheapest means of contacting individuals you know in other countries.
