Choosing Office Chairs For Comfort

By: Annie Deakin Click author's name for more of his/her articles

You may spend more time in your office chair than any chair in your home. While, in many offices, you have no choice in the chair that you use, if you do have a choice you will want to choose one of the chairs that are most comfortable.

Most of the chairs that are used in offices are on wheels. This allows them to move easily under a desk. In addition to these chairs there may also be a few side chairs that are intended for visitors to the office. Many times side chairs are available to match the desk chair.

Since you will spend so much time in your desk chair, you will want to make sure that it is comfortable for you.

Fortunately, many desk chairs offer many different adjustments. The height of the seat is normally adjusted by a lever on the side of the chair. Most desk chairs are pneumatic. This means that they have a cylinder that is filled with air. The air becomes a cushion for your weight.

The pressure required to lean back in a seat is also often adjustable. Persons who use their keyboard and mouse regularly will find that a good back support is important in an office chair.

Office chairs may be covered in fabric, vinyl or leather. Many of the newer office chairs offer a mesh back or seat, and some now come in a hard, perforated plastic seat and back. The mesh or perforated plastic chairs allow for airflow. This airflow keeps you from sticking to your chair. This is especially appreciated during the summer months when, even in an air-conditioned office you may have problems with perspiration.

Many of the less expensive office chairs come with armrests that are permanently attached and not adjustable. These armrests may present a problem for some desks. Sometimes the armrests are too high and prevent you from moving the chair in a proper position for typing. At other times, the arm rests may catch under the desk. By purchasing a slightly more expensive chair, you can have adjustable armrests that can also be removed. This is very beneficial for users of office chairs.

If you often work at counter height, you may prefer to purchase a chair that is made for counter work. These chairs work better than a stool, since they also offer back support and have a ring style foot support. They allow you to move from a sitting to a standing position with ease.

Office chairs are sold at most office supply stores. You will also find a large variety of office chairs sold online. Since you are looking for comfort, it is advisable to try a chair in person before purchase. This does not mean that you cannot price compare the chair in the office supply house to the one you find online. Just be sure that the name and model number are alike and you can get that perfect office chair online at a better price that if you had bought it at the supply store.
