Clutter Control

If every closet and drawer you open greets you with a groan; if you struggle to find even the simplest things amongst the clutter that fills your rooms; if you can’t remember the last time you could walk around without tripping over something; then these simple tips and tricks for conquering clutter in your home will be invaluable.

• Cleanse your home
The task of clearing out your closets and storage will be particularly daunting, particularly if you haven’t done it recently. Don’t get overwhelmed however. Simply tackle it one closet and drawer at a time. Separate your belongings into three different boxes – keep, donate and toss. Be ruthless with clothing – if you haven’t worn it in over a year then donate it to allow your closets to breathe again. If you live in a seasonal climate area make sure your summer/winter clothes are separated and each one stored when not in use so your day-to-day closet only holds those items that you can actually use. If you are a hoarder then use the same rule again when you decide whether or not to keep something – have you used it in the past year? If not and it has no sentimental value it should be donated or tossed too.

• Sort and organize
You should now have whittled down your belonging to those things you really want to keep in your home and life. The next step is figuring out how to organize them so they are readily accessible when you need them. A great way to organize things, while still keeping them close at hand but looking neat, is with baskets, boxes, trays and other storage devices. Color coordinate these storage tools and your books on shelves to give an air of order and symmetry. Employ trays in your entryway to keep keys, wallets and other day-to-day items organized but also within reach. Use baskets and boxes in living areas to conceal items and keep a streamlined look. Add hooks or coat racks to entryways so there is always a spot to hang up your coats and sweaters. Shoe cabinets are also a great addition to any home to stash even the most extensive collections.

• Put your furniture to work
A great way to help organize your home is with multifunctional furniture that can add solutions for storage and space effortlessly. Modern coffee tables that can be used for storage, dining and working are the ultimate examples of multifunctionality. The tops can be lifted into a higher position, transforming the table into the perfect spot for TV dinners and late-night work. Built-in storage hides remote controls, magazine and your other living room essentials. Functionality has also moved into the bedroom. Designers have put the space underneath your bed to work with under-bed drawers and beds that can be raised to reveal a large storage compartment – perfect for clothing and bedding. If you’re stuck for space, try ottomans that convert into beds, contemporary sofa beds and extendable dining tables.

• Keep it going
The most important part of any project like this is that you keep it going after your project is complete. Don’t fall back into old habits. Make sure you use your storage space efficiently and effectively. Take a few minutes every week to ensure your rooms are cleared of clutter. Not only will it make your home look better, it will also help you relax more easily in your home.

Use these simple tips to help you conquer clutter in your home and get the most out of the space you have.
