There are many different types of pain you may experience in your life, and it seems like for every one, there are three different types of painkillers that are supposed to be the best. There are so many different medications out there that it can be really difficult to decide which one is best for your type of pain. Are over the counter painkillers the best, or should you ask a doctor for a prescription? The following list contains many of the most common painkillers and the type of pain they are designed to deal with.

Aspirin used to be the be-all, end-all cure for all types of pains, and while it isn't as widely used as it once was, it is still good for nearly all types of aches. It has also been show to actually help lower your risk of having a stroke and of heart disease. Many people still take aspirin for pain and find that it works very well for many issues.

Ibuprofen is another very popular painkiller that is widely available over the counter. Ibuprofen works very well for muscle pains of all types, migraines, arthritis, general strains and sprains, and inflammation and pain caused by periods. Ibuprofen also works very well as a painkiller for toothaches.

Paracetamol is another over the counter painkiller that works well for headaches, toothaches, and sprains. It has also been shown to help relieve the symptoms of the common cold and of fever.

Codeine has become a popular painkiller lately, even though it is only available with a prescription. Codeine is used by doctors as a general painkiller, and it is often used in combination with other prescriptions and medications.

Morphine is another prescription drug that just about everyone has heard of. It is used to relieve pain caused by heart attacks, and it is also used for major back pain, kidney stones, and for those who may experience pain after surgery. Morphine, like many other prescription painkillers, can be very addictive.

Oxycodone is a much more powerful painkiller that is prescription-only. Generally, it is only prescribed to those who have just gone through surgery or are experiencing very severe back pains.

Those who play sports often may be prescribed piroxicam at some point. This painkiller is used to treat most sports pains, sprains, tennis elbow, and other pains. It is also prescribed for those with osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and juvenile arthritis.

These are just a few of the most common over the counter and prescription painkillers on the market. Remember that while any painkiller is going to help, if you use the correct painkiller for your symptoms, you may find that the pain is greatly reduced.
