Cool Apps for the HTC Magic

The HTC Magic is the second smartphone to use the Google Android operating system. One of the great advantages of running a system such as Android is that you can use a number of cool Apps with your phone, which are either built in, or can be freely downloaded from the Android Market. Here are some of the best around:

Metal Detector: This uses the magnet inside the phone to help you find metal, so you can finally fulfil all those childhood dreams of going hunting for buried treasure in the woods. Who knows, maybe you will find a pot of gold! It could also be used for recreating the infamous airport security scene in the movie Spinal Tap, although remember to wrap the cucumber in foil first!

Barcode Scanner: This cool app allows you to use the camera on the magic to read bar codes and obtain price information off the internet. Perfect if you are wanting to check whether something on offer in a shop is genuinely a good deal, although it does not work on every bar code.

Trap: A modern re-mix of the old mobile gaming favourite, this version of Trap makes use of the Magics touch screen to enable you to draw the lines that trap the balls in real time with your finger.

The game is given an added frisson by the use of the touch screen interface on the Magic, which makes it even more frustratingly addictive. You will find yourself wasting time you did not know that you had!

NRU: This app uses the internal compass in conjuction with the GPS device inside the phone to tell you how to get to bars, nightclubs, and bowling alleys anywhere in the world, which is handy if you get lost on a boozy holiday night out. It would be even more handy if it could tell you how to get to the nearest ATM, but maybe that is asking for trouble!

Google Maps: This comes pre installed to your apps folder, so there is no need to download it. It uses the GPS and compass devices in your phone to turn it into a fully fledged sat nav system, like the taxi drivers use.

Even cooler is the streetview option, which gives you a full 3D virtual reality view of any street in the UK, and some in other parts of the world. The coolest thing about it is that, thanks to the HTC magics internal accelerometer, you can pan around these 3D streets just by moving your phone around.
