Cosmetology and The Need for Continuing Education

By: Shannon Wray Click author's name for more of his/her articles

Cosmetology is the “science” of hair, skin and nails and beauty treatments that can be applied to them. As with most everything else in the professional world, techniques and procedures in cosmetology are always being improved and thereby making the need for Continuing Education in Cosmetology a necessity. We focus on cosmetology in the US, but with minor modifications, these courses could be applied to other developed and developing countries as well. We first give a brief introduction, then mention the educational and licensing requirements, and then give a description of Continuing Education in Cosmetology. On-line education is also described herein.

A general cosmetologist would be proficient in performing basic tasks in all categories of hair, skin and nails. Experienced professional cosmetologists can specialize in one of the following disciplines; Hair Stylist, Shampoo Technician, Nail Technician, Esthetician, and Electrologist. Afterward, with experience they can progress to become senior cosmetologists or managers.
To become a cosmetologist one must first get a license. In order to do this one must graduate from cosmetologist. The cosmetology course must be accredited by a professional institution.

Depending on the person's interest and whether he wants to further his technical carrier or wants to go into management, he/she can take continuing education courses in Cosmetology or Management. Cosmetology Continuing Education courses in the various fields are up to 3 to 6 months in duration. In the US, in most states it is mandatory that an individual take Continuing Education courses as the Cosmetologist's license is only valid for 2 to 5 years and license can only be renewed after taking such courses.

While fashions and skills in Cosmetology don't change as fast as in Engineering, Technology and other areas, still they keep changing with time and one's skills must be refreshed from time to time to stay abreast of the latest developments. Also, new beauty products keep coming in the market continually requiring one to refresh his/her skills.
An increasingly popular option for cosmetology continuing education is online schooling. On-line Cosmetology education is very promising because practicing Cosmetologists can pursue on-line education at their home in their free time. This makes it ideal for pursuing further education while working. You can know more about online continuing education at www.preferredce.com.
