Create the Perfect Personals Profile

Online dating sites have become very popular - and with good reason. Rather than spending hours upon hours going to singles events, bars and other social activities trying to find someone who interests you, you just log on to your computer and browse the profiles of other singles in your area. You can start a conversation and get to know the other person without changing out of your pajamas

The most challenging part of internet dating, however, is creating an interesting profile. Often, this can be the most difficult part of online dating. Sure, you want to say things that are most likely to appeal to others, but you also want to reflect who you are and what you're looking for. Unless you're a skilled writer, this can be an extremely challenging task.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is writing your profile when you're in a negative frame of mind. If you're like most people, you probably find it difficult to say positive things about yourself. But trying to say positive things when you're feeling anxious, unloved or depressed is an impossible task. Unfortunately, that's also when you're most likely to turn to online dating in the first place! Especially after a divorce or breakup or when you're just plain tired of being alone.

It's a lot easier to start creating your profile offline. Staring at the blank screen of the online dating site is intimidating and it's easy to just type a couple of quick sentences and hit the "submit" button. The best time to start creating your profile is when you're in a really good mood - such as after a fun evening out with friends or after a particularly good day at work. Pick a few positive traits that describe your personality. For example, are you fun-loving or are solitary evenings at home more your style? Are you creative and artistic or a serious business professional? Do you prefer daily interactions with family and friends or are you happier spending quiet evenings alone with someone special? You don't need to describe everything about yourself, but you do want to give others a reason to contact you. No matter what you write, you're not going to appeal to everyone, so don't try - just be yourself.

Next, write a few sentences that describe what you're looking for in a partner. Don't be afraid to be specific and don't worry about offending others. The people who might be offended are not going to be a good fit for you anyway! Of course, this step requires that you actually do know what you're looking for. Describing personality traits is more important than physical characteristics when seeking a long-term relationship. If you're shy, for example, are you looking for someone more outgoing who will help you come out of your shell or would you be happier with someone who is equally quiet and reserved? Are you looking for someone who will interact well with your children, your pets or your friends? Describe the attributes that will make that possible. If there's an activity you're passionate about, be sure to indicate that you're looking for someone who shares that passion.

Your profile doesn't have to be long, but it shouldn't be too short, either. A single short paragraph isn't going to generate interest or provide something to talk about, but attempting to write a book isn't necessary. Most people will read no more than three to four paragraphs.

Above all, write with personality! If you're playful and fun, make sure your profile sounds fun. If your friends often describe you as someone "with attitude," don't be afraid to let that attitude show. Be yourself and you'll be far more likely to attract someone who will accept you for who you are.
