Custom Built vs. Prefabricated – Choosing the Right RV Garage

After investing thousands of dollars in the RV of your dreams, can you think of a better way to protect that investment than by having an RV garage to put it in? People who own RVs know that RVs are too large to park inside your typical garage.

For most people, their houses do not come equipped with an RV garage. This problem has a solution, fortunately. You can choose one of two options: buying and assembling a prefabricated RV garage on your property yourself, or contracting with someone who can construct a custom RV garage for you.

Materials like vinyl siding, steel, cedar, or other wood siding can be used to make prefabricated garages. Durable materials such as these are better able to withstand extreme weather conditions than RV garages constructed of lighter weight aluminum.

A custom built RV garage can be tailored both to your functional needs as well as to your home's aesthetics. A custom built RV garage can be constructed as one large space, or into smaller side rooms for storing additional vehicles and equipment. These side rooms can also be a home office, guest room, or workshop. Ordering RV garage blueprints and having a builder that is local construct it is another choice. Custom built garages are constructed from long lasting, high quality materials, thus they last for many years.

But if you're simply looking to keep your RVs roof clear of elements such as snow, rain, and direct sunlight, there are prefabricated RV carports available that will suit your needs. While custom garages are typically complete structures, many prefabricated garages lack walls to prevent damage from blowing debris and dirt. There is a big advantage to having walls. With walls, your vehicle is protected against vandalism and burglary. If you want additional security, you should think about installing a burglar alarm to scare away vandals before they have a chance to harm your vehicle.

No matter which RV garage you choose, make sure you take measurements of your RV to be certain it will fit. Your RV garage will require, at minimum, twelve foot doors. If you’re RV has an addition on the roof such as luggage racks or an air conditioning unit, making it even taller, you may need your garage doors to be as much as 14 feet tall. Make certain that your RV measurements account for the additional space necessary for walking around the vehicle while it is parked.
