Have you ever wondered what e-Commerce actually is? e-Commerce, also known as eCommerce, is short for electronic commerce. And you might ask? So what's electronic commerce, then? Glad you asked! It's buying and selling stuff over the Internet. These stuff can be of different forms: tangible products, like shoes that you will receive at home, or downloadable for instant access or a service. eCommerce stores are of very different and diverse kinds: regular stores, downloadable products portals, auction sites etc... It's not rare to see the 1st page of search engines dominated by these eCommerces.

Think about it. Without even having to leave your house or to visit a store, you can find the product you need and receive it the very next day at your home. Maybe you don't see this as something extraordinary but do you remember, some years ago we didn't have access to all this. We can purchase anything, no matter what the time is or where the product is. It's fantastic when we think how eCommerce has exploded these last years. I think it's not going to slow down. Also, you can expect the line between regular and ecommerce to blur more and more.

Simple definition of e-commerce: It is the process of offering goods through an online catalogue to visitors who can order whatever they want whenever they want. For many, the amazing growth of the eCommerce has been the source of new opportunities. The chance of getting rich inspires people to invent new and better ways of doing all this. The phone is also a way to make transactions between a buyer and a seller. Then eCommerce can also be applied there.

Businesses also sell stuff to other businesses, rather than to consumers, over the Internet. We call this business model B2B. It stands for Business To Business. A lot of tasks needed to run a business are outsourced to other businesses, and this is often done via the internet. e-Commerce has a lot of advantages over old-fashioned approaches for B2B. It's incredible how finding new customers have been made easier and faster with the existence of e-commerce.

It is worth mentioning that when we describe e-commerce as buying and selling stuff over the internet, it doesn't quite tell the whole story. It isn't just selling, e-Commerce also includes passing data back and forth in order for financing and payment to happen. Without this background processing, ecommerce owners wouldn't get paid.

Oh. One more thing. Have you been intrigued by the lower case e in front of eCommerce ? It's always lower case, but could we write E commerce instead? This tiny lower case e is the initial of electronic. If we say electronic, we are talking about electrons. Electrons are the sub-atomic particles whose moving around gives us energy in the form of electricity. In the science world, we write e for electron.

What is e-commerce? Business done electronically. Buying and selling stuff over the Internet. What is e-commerce? Soon, it may be all commerce.
