Do I Need a Degree to have a Medical Marketing Job?

New medications and inventions are being discovered everyday. Companies need employees to make these new products widely recognized. This is how the field of medical marketing came to be. There's a need for the marketing of medical devices and new drugs. Careers in medical sales and marketing have been drastically increasing over the years and continue to do so making this a great field to get into. Although there is not a certain degree required, it is a challenging job, so some experience or a degree in a related field is usually preferred.

Like all marketing jobs, the main function of the position is generating revenue. This is done by acquiring new customers and maintaining relationships with them. They do this by visiting medical institutions and selling the product they are promoting. They analyze the market and come up with marketing plans before products are designed and produced. Another important aspect is advertising, which can be done through television, internet, radio, ads in newspapers and magazines. Have you seen the commercials for new medications? This is medical marketing at its finest. People who see the commercials and have the symptoms mentioned go to their Doctor to find out more and possibly get it prescribed. Medical Marketing and sales reps also conduct research to identify new products and new markets opportunities.

There is currently an abundance of medical marketing and sales jobs available. Pharmaceutical, healthcare information, medical technology and Biotechnology companies are a few of the types of companies that hirer medical marketers. When looking for a job, you will not find one companies requirements that are the same as the other. A degree in one of the life sciences(biology, chemistry), or a business degree with a good number of science classes is helpful. If you don't have one of those, your chances are not good. People experienced in the healthcare industry, marketing industry, engineering or sales have an added advantage because medical marketing jobs combines all of these things. The wide range of requirements can make it difficult to find an opening that you are qualified for. If you are a new to medical marketing you can start as a marketing assistant and work your way up.

Training classes for medical sales and marketing personel are available. Known as Medical Sales Vocational Training, these study courses can be helpful for those with little or no experience or for those who want to brush up on their skills. Some of the aspects you learn in these courses are industry and medical product knowledge, new sale techniques, and medical sales techniques.

So, although a degree is not required, it is difficult to find employment as a medical marketer with without one. If you do not have any experience or education, a vocational course will be a tremendous help in landing a position. Starting small and working your way up is always an option. Eventually you will have all the experience and expertise to no longer just assist, but to be on your own, or even get into management.
