Does Your Small Business Need Employee Safety Courses?

Most large businesses will offer accredited safety courses for new employees, and some will even provide extensive ongoing safety training for select employees in key positions throughout the organization. Many small businesses have a need for this type of safety training program, but they are often reluctant to make room in their budget. This may be because they do not realize the importance of safety training courses, or it might be because they think they can properly train employees on the job without paying for accredited courses.

If you own a small business, you may be wondering whether you need to invest in a safety program for your workers. The following questions will help you identify your need, or lack of it.

1. What are the risks in all aspects of your business?

If there are health or safety risks in any portion of your business, then you have a direct need for employee safety courses. Everyone has to know what the risks are and how to avoid them. They also need to know what to do in the case of an accident or crisis.

2. Worst case scenario, what could happen if an accident were to occur in one of your facilities?

Think about the biggest safety threats in your business and imagine what would happen if something were to go wrong. This is never a pleasant thought, but it will help you see the necessity of implementing some type of safety course program with your employees. It is always better to prevent that worst case scenario than to react to it.

3. How many workers do you have in locations with known safety threats?

At the very least, employees who work directly with equipment or substances that could lead to safety risks should have proper safety training. If you have a large number of workers in these positions, there are ways to put them through accredited safety courses without spending an enormous amount of money.

4. How many accidents have taken place in your business in the last five or ten years?

The more accidents you have already experienced, the greater your need for employee safety training courses. Make it your goal to cut the number of accidents down as much as possible. Consider an incentive program for those who go through safety courses and then operate without safety violations or accidents.

5. What are the laws and regulations for your country and/or state regards to safety?

Some industries require workers in specific positions to go through safety courses. If this applies to your industry, make sure you are abiding by the laws.

You do not have to pay to send every single employee in your business through safety training courses. You can provide accredited safety courses for managers or team leaders, and then allow them to use their materials to pass their knowledge down to others working beneath them. Alternatively, just set up a program that puts new hires through safety courses before they start working in the regular work environment.

If you need safety courses and implement a dedicated program, you will see accidents drop significantly in your business. This could save you a lot of money, especially if you have a high rate of accidents with your business.
