It is a surprising thing to learn that in most building codes there is no minimum requirement as to the quality of the locks. In fact, it is not even mandatory to have an outside lock for a house, but security needs and insurance requirements demand that you install a proper lock on all your exterior entrances. It is in your best interest to protect your valuable possessions.

Contractors almost always prefer to go for the cheapest ones available. Security concerns are yours, not that of the contractor. So ultimately it is up to you to select the most appropriate locks systems for your particular situation. Let us examine what are the important features to be considered when you select an exterior lock.

Use a lock with Grade 1 ANSI classification. The American National Standard Institute or ANSI has a system for classification of locks according to their durability and reliability. It is developed by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association Inc. Not all the locks in the same grade are the same. They differ according to their types. Each type is tested differently for its security and durability. This third party assurance makes it easy for the consumer to make a suitable selection.

Always install locks with deadbolts for the extra strength that they provide. There are several types of exterior locks for buildings. Some are equipped with latch bolts, some with dead bolts, and then there's a latch bolt and dead bolt combination.

The throw of the deadbolt is an important factor in what you choose. Throw is the length of the deadbolt extended from the edge of the door. The longer the throw the better the security and a minimum of one inch throw is highly recommended. A shorter length may succumb to pressure from outside. If sufficient force is applied by someone who is trying to gain access, the door may open.

Key control is another important factor in deciding on buying a lock. Key control merely means deciding who should have a copy of the key. Most keys can be copied at any local hardware or building supply store. Anyone who you employ, whether it be a babysitter or a renovator, can easily copy your key even if you only loan it to them for a little while.

A former domestic helper who feels that they were unfairly treated, may take decide to take a little revenge by helping themselves to some of your property using their copy of your key. Other shady characters may also do the same if they get their hands on your key, so be mindful of who you loan it to.

At sometime or other, many of us have faced the embarrassment and inconvenience of losing our keys. A lost ring of keys may include ones for your home, your automobile, and your office, so an immediate replacement is absolutely necessary.
