Don’t Try to Escape Your Life

Americans have become more and more addicted to escapism in all of its forms. If you don’t believe me, just take a minute to think about how you spend your free time. How much of your time is spent in front of the tv, watching a movie, shopping, or playing video games? Do you possibly drink too much, smoke too much, or abuse drugs? There are so many options for escapism in America, it is hard to resist them. They offer the appeal of what appears to be a quick fix from life’s problems. To make matters worse, advertisers are focused almost solely on preaching the virtues of retail therapy, or the concept that buying something, be it a movie ticket or a new pair of pants, will instantly transform your life into a glamorous, exciting existence.

Of course watching TV, movies, or even shopping aren’t all bad, but when done in excess, they limit your opportunities to learn and grow. I won’t even get into abusing alcohol or drugs to escape because the negative effect of these addictions on the life of a substance abuser are very obvious and very well documented. If you are struggling at all in this area, please watch the show “Intervention” on A&E. This is the best show on the affects of addiction.

You need to sit down and think about how you may have been affected by advertisers if you want to get down to your true desires and start developing your own talents. You may be surprised when you realize that you are actually very persuaded to think that a new Gucci bag instantly makes you a better person. The reality is, what makes you a better person is so much more about how you interact with people every day--how you show your character, how you become a true friend to someone.

If you take a minute to reflect on the time that you spend in activities that push you to escape from your own reality, it may be eye opening. If you are always trying to escape, what are you escaping from? Is there something about your life that you don’t like and that you’d like to not think about for the 1 ½ hours that you’re sitting in that darkened movie theater?

Now, everyone will have some valid responses to these kinds of questions. If you’re a parent and every day you’re dealing with active, crying, toddling, rummaging little children, yes, you do sometimes need that 1 ½ hours of relative quiet in a movie theater all to yourself. If you are a stressed out office worker deeply entrenched in the rat race, yes, you need some time to just walk the aisles of a local mall looking for a little distraction from the daily grind.

These are all valid reasons for escapism, and there are many more. But when escaping starts to become your reality, you are in for trouble. You should take time to reflect on how you use your time, and if you’re trying to escape instead of developing your own talents and pursuing healthy goals to better your own life, living vicariously through someone else in the tabloids or on the movie screen will never make you happy.

When setting goals to better your life, don’t neglect your health. You need to be getting a good mix of vitamins and nutrients every day if you want to feel good at all. Try a daily multivitamin to make sure you’re getting enough of vitamins C and E, B12 and D, and calcium, which are often neglected. There are many different varieties available, but generally speaking, it is best to choose a multivitamin that is specifically suited for a man or woman. There are also excellent multivitamins for children. Be sure to consult your doctor before adding a multivitamin to your daily diet.
