Double Your Income by Learning How to Clean Your Garage-1

I'm sure you're wondering what in the world cleaning your garage could have to do with your ability to double your income. The truth of the matter is that you could take any goal in your life and use it as a model to learn how to double your income. Cleaning your garage is a great example because it is a concrete goal that you can construct and easily measure your results.

Other goals are just as important that could lead you down the road to double your income, too. Sometimes, the main goal is to spend more time with a loved one or to change negative thought patterns. The problem with some of these goals is that they are too abstract. If you take on abstract goals, you'll get vague responses.

So you want to spend more time with your family? I want you to set a goal with an exact date. I want to spend more time with my family has too many holes. Who, where, what, and when? Try this: I will go to the zoo with my daughter this Saturday. This is my idea of an effectively stated goal.

Let's get back to the goal of your garage. There are two types of goals. The one that most people use is what I like to call the binary goal. The binary goal means there are two options. Either you clean your garage or you don't. Either you pass or you fail. Either you feel sad or you feel happy. I want to clean my garage. You need to be more specific.

The second type of goal is called the MTO goal. MTO stands for Minimum, Target, and Outrageous. By separating your goals into these categories, you set yourself up for success no matter what you do. The big picture is that you want your garage cleaned, right? Maybe you haven't been able to roll your car into your garage for over ten years. It's a complete mess. Did you take on more than you could chew?

First, set your minimum goal. Make this goal something small, something that you can absolutely be counted on to accomplish. Your minimum goal could be that you are going to get the bald tire out of the garage that you threw in there two years ago. It doesn't seem like much, but it's something. It's the minimum thing you could do to achieve your goal.

Now, let's set the target. The target goal could be to fill up one of those extra large trash bags and throw some stuff to the curve. While this might not result in the end result of a clean garage, you are starting to get somewhere. You see once you achieve the minimum. The chances are that you will want to do just a little bit more. The target should be an achievable goal that you can do with some effort.

The outrageous goal is that you are going to take everything out of the garage, paint it white, and only put back what you need. If you haven't cleaned your garage in ten years, that should seem outrageous.

If you want to double your income, it's the same principle. Set your minimum, target, and outrageous. Once you start to see results, you'll keep going.
