Some people struggle to achieve success in their home-based businesses. Could it be that they have been programmed with negative ideas about business and sales people?
1. Do they subconsciously harbor a fear or dislike of marketers?
2. Are they skeptical about the value of what is being offered?
3. Are they anticipating being taken advantage of?
4. Do they immediately have resistance when approached by someone who has something to sell?
5. Are they expecting someone to try to "steal" their money?
I would suggest that if you have any of this negative static around money and the people who market things to you, then you may be sabotaging your own marketing efforts! After all, if you believe that most marketers are trying to scam you, then how could you, in good conscience, belong to that club too?
Here is an exercise:
Take a piece of paper to a quiet room. Take some deep conscious breaths. Let your mind wander over the topic of money, sales, and marketing. Now write down every word that comes to mind both positive and negative on these topics. After your list has filled your page, read over your entries. Observe the emotional charge behind each word and accept it. Keep at it until the emotion has abated.
Now consider that some of these old programmed (usually subconscious) thoughts may no longer serve you. In fact, they may not even be true! Note that some of these thoughts took hold in your mind at a very early age. Recognize the inaccuracy of some of these thoughts and carefully weigh their meaning from the point of view of who you are today and who you aspire to be.
Now consider the possibility that every sales transaction can be WIN-WIN.
The Law of Reciprocity says that when we give, we receive, and there is mutual exchange. When we sow sparingly, we reap sparingly, but when we sow generously, we reap generously as well. In every sales transaction each party becomes both a giver and a receiver and there is an even exchange. Money is both given and received for a product or service that is also both given and received.
Now think about how it felt when you gladly paid for something that you really wanted. Remember a time when the satisfaction of owning that item outweighed any negative thoughts about the cost. Didn’t it seem easy to let that money go? You did it gladly, almost eagerly. You did it joyfully! You may have said “That was money well spent!” Contemplate that phrase. Couldn’t your customers feel that way about whatever it is that you sell? I submit that every transaction on the planet can be WIN-WIN. Both parties can benefit and they should!
To be more effective and successful in our home-based businesses, we should focus on the needs of our customers before we ever mention what we have to offer. Why should we sell someone something that they do not need or want?
Here is my suggestion for more success in your home-based business:
Be more like a doctor!
Find out the chief complaint. What is the main reason this person is here, and how bad is their pain?
“What are you looking for and why?"
Take a history. Find out their real needs.
"What motivates you? “What are you currently doing now, and what have you done before?”
Examine all the aspects of the situation to make a proper diagnosis.
"Are you willing to change your situation?"
Treat the pain.
"I have the prescription for your financial health right here!”
Remember, if we focus on the needs of others while pursuing our true purpose with passion, we will always be able to offer WIN-WIN solutions that result in prosperity for all.
