Epson 8350 - The Best Budget 1080p Projector

Most projectors being released every year are only slightly better than their predecessor. The Epson 8350 is a successor of the 8100, which is a remarkable budget projector. Its price ranges from $1200 to $2000. Will 8350 be better?

Weight

The 8350 weighs 7.4 kilograms. There is nothing special about the weight. It's not the lightest of all projectors but it is definitely easy to be moved or relocated. It comes with a 2-year warranty that covers parts and labor.
LCD and Resolution

The Epson 8350 uses 3LCD technology. It has the D7 chip that delivers 1080p 1920x1080 resolution. The result is images and videos that remain crystal clear regardless if you use the projector on day or night. The only drawback is that the 8350 lacks the CFI for motion smoothing.

The C2Fine LCD panels were first seen in the UB series. It's worth to note that the 8350 is the only Epson entry level projector with this type of LCD panel. Unlike other LCD panels that are clear when the projector is not in use, the Epson 8350's LCD is always dark. As a result, the 1080p projector has a better black performance.

Lamp Life

One of the best qualities of Epson 8350 is its lamp life. The E-TORL projector lamp can be used in constant full power for 4000 hours which is, approximately, more than five months. It's a pretty significant feature because most projector lamps today would only work up to 3000 hours even in eco mode. This is good news for people who worry about the operation cost. This projector is definitely not only budget-friendly in terms of the upfront cost but also with the operation cost.

Color, Brightness and Contrast

The color is good because of the cinema filter that comes with an expanded color gamut that you can find only in Epson projectors. There are several brightness levels. According to the manufacturer's specifications, the 8350 has 2000 lumens but you may only get 1378 lumens when you measure the brightness at the brightest mode. You can also put it in the best mode and you'll see the brightness go down to 467 lumens. It is definitely a great choice for home movie viewing. The black levels are way better than that of Epson 8100, which is not expected considering the 8350's price. The better black levels are due to the better LCD panels. Epson upgraded the LCD panels to D7 C2Fine. Its contrast ratio is 50,000:1.

Lens

There is nothing new in terms of lens. The 8350 has what other Epson projectors have been using for the past years. Nonetheless, the Fujinon 2.1:1 zoom lens is way better than what other brands like Panasonic use. It is even better because of the extensive horizontal and vertical lens shift that increases the projector's flexibility of placement. Take note that the zoom range affects the projector's brightness.

Simply put, the Epson 8350 has improved black levels from the 8100 but its price is lower. The brightness is above satisfactory and the lamp has a long life making it the best budget 1080p projector at present.
