Diabetes is a serious disease in which the body fails to convert blood glucose into energy. A hormone called insulin does this conversion. In diabetics, the body cannot produce insulin or use it correctly to metabolize blood glucose into energy.
Common symptoms of diabetes include extreme thirst, increased hunger, lot of urination, tiredness, weight loss, blurred vision, respiratory infections, dry skin and tingling in the hands or feet.
Diet plays a major role in effectively managing diabetes. The ideal diabetes diet should offer necessary nutrients required and also help in maintaining satisfactory sugar levels in the body. Some factors which should be kept in mind while arranging a diabetes diet include the age, sex, height, weight, the quantity of physical activity of an individual. The diet also needs to be further adjusted according to the insulin dosage. If conditions like high blood pressure or cholesterol are also present, then one must exercise caution in planning the diet and make sure that these problems aren't further irritated.
Ideally, you must begin the day with a glass of warm water or lemon juice. Next, your breakfast should include a major quantity of fruits, especially those which are low in sugar such as guavas, pomegranates, pineapple and oranges. A piece of multi grain bread with butter and a tumbler of milk can also make for the ultimate first meal of the day.
Green leafy vegetables should be a prominent feature for your lunch given their high nutrient value. To retain the health inducing elements of the vegetables, it is best to steam them and not cook them by employing unhealthy methods such as deep frying. Some of the vegetables that you can include in your daily diet are celery, brinjal, cabbage, asparagus, spinach and other similar foods. Whole wheat breads are recommended for lunch as well along with curd or milk butter which is known to aid digestion.
Your dinner must have salad made from raw veggies and fresh cottage cheese subsequently. You may have fresh milk with a break before you go to bed.
Bitter gourd is one food that has proved to outstandingly helpful for those suffering from diabetes. This actual vegetable consists of plant insulin which lowers blood sugar levels significantly. If you can't eat the vegetable, at least consume sour gourd juice between meals to keep your sugar level in check .
There are some food items , however , which you must stay away from if you are suffering from diabetes including wheat flour products. White breads, chocolates, pastries, puddings and anything made of refined cereals should be strictly avoided. Coffee and tea intake should also be limited as they may hinder your digestive processes. Diabetics should also refrain from drinking alcohol.
with eating healthy, you also have to change your cooking systems a little . You mustn't fry food items but instead bake, boil, cook or saut them. You need to also steam or microwave fresh veg before eating them. Among the non-vegetarian food items, you need to eat more of low fat turkey and fish and less of fat rich red beef. You should cut back the intake of condiments, for example ketchup, mustard and salad dressing as they can also contain sugar. Also, you need to rinse processed food in water before eating.
