You may have heard that horse racing is the Sport of Kings, but soccer, or football,, is the King of Sports. The term soccer is derived from the expression 'association football', and at least assists to distinguish the global game, from that played in the USA. People have joined together to boot a ball, or other object around, for centuries. Regulations for the game, that is so popular, were agreed in the UK, in the middle of the nineteenth century. Previous to this the sport had a fairly rough and violent reputation, to the degree that it was forebidden periodically, by royalty.

Soccer is not a complicated sport to comprehend, but in a match involving two contestant teams of eleven players there has to be regulations. Out on the pitch a match is presided over by a referee, whose duty it is to make sure there is fair play, and that the laws of the game are properly considered. Should violations arise he has the power to consider various judgements, the most severe of which is dismissing a player, commonly due to violent or deliberately dangerous play. The opposing side then has the advantage of eleven men versus ten, that often changes the end result of a game. Two other officials are known as linesmen, who help in ruling when the ball is out of play, when players commit fouls, and in other deliberations.

Football's development is the upshot, not only from supporters packing into enormous sports grounds through the ticket points, but also from media exposure, where millions are paid for the privilege of televising matches. Going back to 1930 the major award, the world cup, was won in approximately equal measure by South American and European countries. Global football is a a gigantic industry. From gate money, to TV rights, well known sponsors, to replica football strips, a major industry has been created. Little boys and grown men, and some women and girls, crave to wear the shirts of their top clubs or star players. Some kick balls around in playgrounds, waste ground, and also on quiet streets.

Soccer's worldwide popularity is exemplified by the contest identified as the Jules Rimet Trophy. This football feast changes location to various countries and continents, and there are group matches to pass, before thirty two national teams compete for the cup, at four yearly intervals, over a period lasting about a month. It is reported, that the Jules Rimet Trophy pulls in an audience reckoned to be around double the number, that view the Summer Olympic Games.

It is hard to assess why global football has developed to be the sporting colossus it has become. You may wonder how it is that squads of eleven footballers, passing a ball around for an hour and a half, with a short break as an interval, get such fervent consideration. It may be because there are young men and occasionally women, in the prime of their lives, who through their fitness, provide thrills and spills in a sport that lots of people have played. In a sense it may be a case of there, by the grace of god, go I!
