The total number of online searches posted a 10.1% increase in February 2009 to around 8.5 billion unique searches. According to Nielsen, Google posted a significant 19.2% YOY growth in number of searches in February 2009 compared to the same month, a year earlier. No other search providers could make as significant growth as Google. Google drives the US search marketplace with a 10.1% YOY growth with a contribution of 5.4 billion search queries.

Google’s US search engine share increases to 63.5% in February 2009
The MegaView Search from Nielsen Online, reports that Google expanded its search share in US from 58.7% with 4.5 billion searches in February 2008 to 63.5% in February 2009 with 5.4 billion searches, among overall searches. Thus, searches from Google have a significant 19.2% growth enormously, when compared to YOY growth of overall searches in US.

Almost all other top-10 search providers fail to maintain their search market share
Yahoo, MSN/Windows Live Search, and Comcast Search were the only search engines in US, among the top 10, which could make at least a small positive YOY growth in terms of number of searches. Yahoo’s search share decreased to 16.7% in February 2009 though it reported a growth of 4% in number of searches. MSN’s search share decreased to 10.4% from 11.2% a year earlier, even with a 2.4% YOY growth in number of searches. Comcast showed a small 1.3% YOY growth maintaining its search share with 0.5%. Other top 10 search providers reported a decrease in their YOY searches apart from decrease in search shares. This shows that no other search engines in top 10 list except Comcast Search, could maintain their search market share from declining.

Google seems to be going strong with a significant increase in its search market share as well as in number of searches. It is surprising to see that no other search engines in top 10 list of US, except Comcast Search, could at least maintain their search market share from declining. There was also a significant decrease in number of searches from these search providers. Thus, it is obvious that Google plays a major role in the YOY growth of overall searches in US.
