Has Your Body Forgotten How to Fall Asleep?

By: Phil Tsang

Would you like to know how to fall asleep safely, naturally and without using sleeping pills? One of the most important things you must learn is that it's almost impossible to make yourself fall asleep. You have to retrain your subconscious and reawaken your own natural ability to fall asleep. One easy method combines progressive relaxation and deep breathing techniques. Practicing this easy-to-learn sleep technique can help you avoid the use of dangerous prescription sleep medications.

Falling asleep is something they can't really be forced. Our conscious mind is indispensable throughout the day, but it is really very little help when going to sleep at night. When we have trouble getting to sleep, it's often because our conscious mind is wrestling with some problem encountered earlier in the day, or it is trying to live the next day in advance. The trick to dozing off is learning how to switch off your conscious mind and allow your subconscious to do its job.

If you consistently have trouble going to sleep, you may need to retrain your subconscious mind. This is especially true if you have relied on sleeping pills in the past. Your body may be depending on medication instead of working as it was originally designed to do. You will need to release the expectation that drugs are going to do the job, and reassign your subconscious mind to the task.

If you can't make yourself go to sleep, how can you direct your subconscious mind? One good way is by combining the techniques of progressive relaxation and deep breathing. Try lying on your back in a comfortable position and begin to breathe deeply. As you inhale and exhale, imagine that your body is getting heavier and sinking deeply into the bed. Starting with your head, focus on relaxing a different part of your body each time you exhale. Keep going until you reach your toes. Many people find that they begin to drift off during this process. If it doesn't work the first time, don't give up.

Progressive relaxation and deep breathing techniques can occupy your conscious mind and allow your subconscious to take over. This will help you avoid the futility of trying to force yourself to sleep and will enable your body to regain its own natural ability to sleep. This is only one of many effective techniques that can help you if you're wondering how to fall asleep.
