Oprah Winfrey's historic new series based on Eckhart Tolle's new book, 'A New Earth', is providing excellent insights that can be extremely useful to the home business entrepreneur.
That's because, being a successful entrepreneur from home calls for honing some particular skill sets. One such skill is the ability to minimize the behavior which generates ineffective Complaints.
That's because the vast majority of complaining that people do has nothing to do with change but rather has more to do with venting and seeking agreement regarding one's complaint.
Voicing a complaint such as, "The copy machine has stopped working," is completely valid. It essentially brings up the fact that something is wrong and needs to be addressed. Having said that; it's easy to turn a valid complaint into a complaint dripping with drama.
Oprah and Eckhart spent significant time during the third episode of 'A New Earth' discussing how a person's ego is responsible for these 'drama complaints' and the consequences it produces- especially for the home business enteepreneur.
An example of a valid complaint such as; "The copy machine has stopped working", turned into a complaint with drama might sound like: "This copy machine is as worthless as the salesman who sold it to me - and why is the world trying so hard to keep me from succeeding."
Complaints which contain drama embellish the story and add unnecessary negative energy to the situation. It adds nothing of value to the situation and does nothing of significance to promote positive change.
It is critical for home business entrepreneurs to stay focused on turning whatever 'lemons' that show up and turn them into lemonade. The better a business person gets at this skill their chances for success begin to multiply.
Getting yourself, your team members, prospects, and clients 'out of the problem' and into potential solutions is the game. The problem is just what is, and arguing about what is just as pointless as whining about the color of snow.
Allowing yourself to stay 'stuck' in a complaint (or the story that surrounds it) drains physical and emotional energy, as well as time, motivation; and undercuts people's opinion about your leadership.
As a leader it's your job to direct people's focus to what you want them to focus on (forward progress) – and this begins with controlling YOUR focus first.
In addition, most people who be of value to the quality of your life don't enjoy a complainer – in fact most people avoid them every chance they get. As an entrepreneur it's critical to attract prospects and clients, and not repel them.
The famous quote, 'We have seen the enemy, and he is us', points out we are often our own worst enemy. Learning these lessons from Oprah's show with Eckhart Tolle is a great opportunity to delve deeply into oneself in order to identify core issues which hold us back as home business entrepreneurs.
