We should never underestimate how important our hair is as we know how often we judge someone by the hairstyle they have when we meet them and how much time is spent ensuring our hair looks ok before we go out in public. The problem with hair loss it affects both sexes although men are more likely to suffer with it and it affects the self confidence of the majority of sufferers.

Hair Loss, also referred to as balding, is caused by a variety of factors, the most important being hereditary and because hair loss runs in the family and gene therapy may lead scientists to a cure in the future. The primary reason for hair loss is a genetic trait passed through families and science may one day find a way to stop this problem but there are other reasons why a person might start losing their hair. Hair follicles on certain areas of the mans head are more likely to be affected by increased male sex hormone as they get older and the hair follicles in these areas suffer from what could be considered an overdose of hormones.

This sex hormone increase is the problem that must be overcome if the hair loss is to be halted. An imbalance of hormones is usually a genetic trait that as of yet, cannot be cured.

Pattern baldness is still the most common form of hair loss and with the aid of the hormone DHT, which we produce naturally, can at least be treated. Shampoos like Rogaine for instance, work by stimulating the growth of hair, thus counteracting the effects of excessive hair loss and pills like Propecia, help keep DHT levels normal so follicles are not flooded with it. The condition pattern baldness is referred to as such because certain areas of the scalp are affected by increased levels of DHT so transplant surgery redistributes hair from areas that are not affected by this hormone.

Our hair growth takes place in cycles which last between two to six years and at any one time about ten percent of our hair is in a dormant phase and not growing but starts to shed after a few months when new hair will grow in its place. Hair normally grows at a rapid rate of about one centimeter each month and there is absolutely nothing wrong with hair loss as part of this cycle it is just some individuals tend to lose more than others for various other conditions.

Many causes for hair loss have been put forward over the years including tight hats, stress, scalp dirt and more but these are not true. With the exception of stress, none of these factors has been proven as a definitive cause of hair loss but stress is also not very likely unless you have undergone extreme physical or psychological torture but fortunately this hair loss is can also be temporary in nature.

Of course there are other situations where hair loss can occur like medical treatments that use chemotherapy, pills that control hormones, scalp infections, diseases like diabetes and even pills to control depression. A permanent solution to hair loss might take sometime and while many people wait anxiously for it, they will have to use what science has devised so far.
