How To Design And Furnish A Bedroom

There are a few basics that are required for every bedroom which are a dressing area, comfortable sleeping and a place for sitting. Any room can become a bedroom when furnished well. To start, consider the space you have for your bedroom and decide where you want to put your bed and which space you want for the dressing and sitting area.

When you are planning for placement of your furniture you need to think about how you can make the most of your space and where the outlets in the room are placed. In making your design, start with the frame for the bed and see how the placement looks. After you have put your bed together, put on new linens and bedspread or comforter. The nightstand goes next to the bed and then you can step back and assess what you have so far.

The windows are next. Using curtains or drapes that are matching with the bed covering, put up your new window treatments. When selecting your fabrics, keep in mind the colouring of the walls and floor. Now bring in the dressers. If possible two matching dressers work best providing plenty of space for storage of your clothing. The dresser positioning should be either close to the closet or near corners. You want to create a grouping so that all the clothing is in one convenient area of the room.

In front of the dressers and closet is a good area to create a dressing space. You can easily set up a room divider or decorative screen if you want to have privacy in this space of the room. Place a mirror in this area not only for function but to give the room more depth and interest.

Most people want either a dressing table for applying makeup and doing hair or a desk for a computer in the bedroom. The desk should be placed near outlets for the electronic components. Add a chair pushed up to the dressing table or desk with a couple wall art pieces symmetrically placed and your room is almost finished.

Provided there is enough room, a small love seat or couch is a very attractive addition and is also very functional. Placement of the love seat is best under a window that gets direct sunlight. This will be your quiet spot for doing a little reading and relaxing or some meditation away from the noise of the rest of the house. The couch needs to match the other fabrics and color scheme of the space.

When you are working with a smaller sized room it is best to use smaller furniture. This makes the space seem a lot larger than it is. Add an area rug to bring in more interest and a decorative flair to your bedroom. The rug should be a match to the color aesthetic of the room.

Using an area rug with a carpet is fine but the rug needs to compliment the carpet. If the carpet has pattern then the rug needs to be plain but if the carpet is plain then using a pattern that works well with the drapes and bedspread works good. If you cannot decide using floral is a safe choice. Again, the smaller room needs smaller pattern. A huge pattern will swallow up the space and be overpowering in a small area. Now use a few little accessories and candles and your room is complete.
