If you are like most college students, you will not be able to find enough grants or scholarships to pay for your entire education. If you find that you are struggling to pay your bills, even with the grants or loans you can get, a good budget can help you free up some more money to pay for your schooling.

The first step in getting on a budget is to get over your fear. Most people view budgets as negative, constraining items, but if you use it properly, a good budget is quite freeing. You will know how much you can afford to spend on various items, rather than wondering whether or not you have enough money.

Start by simply writing down your expenses and your income. Include the supplies that you need for school, such as books, paper, and calculators. Compare the two lists. If you have extra money, you are in good shape. Make a plan, stick to it, and start saving your surplus. If you find that you do not have enough money, start thinking about ways to get more or ways to cut your spending. Both are possible, with a little creativity.

Start an envelope system that designates certain monies for specific expenditures. For instance, you can stash $20 a month in an envelope for clothing, and then you will have a nice bit of money to spend when you need new shoes. Pay cash for everything, if possible. It is easier to spend more if you are paying with a credit or debit card. Of course, there will be times when you cannot pay with cash, but try to when possible.

Eat on campus as much as possible. You are already paying for these meals if you are paying for room and board, so avoid eating out. Think of some quick lunches you can pack from your room if your schedule demands that you eat on the go. You will waste hundreds of dollars each month if you regularly eat on the run. Budget some money for an occasional meal out with friends, but do not make this your habit.

Learn to live frugally. Clip coupons, shop at second hand stores, and frequent the sale rack. When you save money out of one of your budget categories, put it towards your school bill. After a while you will learn to lower those budgeted category amounts so you can put more towards your school bill. Paying for school starts with a plan, so view your budget as a tool, not an enemy. Soon you will be enjoying the income from your first post-graduation job, but for now, learn to live with what you have.
