While there are different types of antidepressant medications and medication for panic attacks available, some are more suited for various individuals than others. The side effects of each drug and the level of performance effectiveness can vary with each individual. The traditional medication for depression used to be tri-cyclic antidepressant medications which were named for their chemical structure. The side effects may include blurred vision, dry mouth, and weight gain, fatigue and weakness amongst others. Sometimes you may even experience symptoms that are similar to depression (examples being, fatigue and constipation).
If doctors diagnosed a patient with the following symptoms: Excessive sleeping or constant worry and nervousness, uncontrollable panic strikes and phobias, a prescription for Monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs will most likely be administered. These symptoms are known as "atypical" depression. Like other antidepressant, patients may be prevented from operating machinery as the side effects of consuming such drugs include dizziness and increased heartbeat. Apart from that, patients have to refrain from certain foods and drinks which may contain ingredients that would react with the chemicals in their drugs. The consequences may be fatal if patients disregard their doctor’s instructions.
While traditional antidepressants and anxiety disorder treatment have proved reliable and is still widely in use, modern research in this field has brought newer drugs to help ease the suffering of depression patients. SSRIs, identified by their full medical term as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have not been approved and are used extensively. Some of these SSRIs include Prozac, Luvox, Paxil and Zoloft. The reaction on serotonin in the brain determines how effective a antidepressant is although most of the drugs contain dissimilar active ingredients and are chemically different.
Patients are advised that although antidepressant would ease the effects of depression, it would take time to recover completely. Patients should remain committed to recovering, complying with their medication requirements and follow up with therapy to a speedy recovery.
