Move around the canvas using each different type of grip and you should start to see the variation in the brush strokes between this method and the standard type of grip. You are probably starting to find that this is quite interesting as you do it. The less tight grips bring about far broader strokes. They should also appear easy, free flowing and almost less certain. Okay, you are beginning to get into this now so read further for more advice about how to watercolor paint.

The next grip to try is the completely different. You might not believe it but you are going to learn how to watercolour using something called the screwdriver grip, of all things! This might appear to be quite odd at outset and your school teacher would certainly have bee unimpressed if you had tried to draw like this at school but persevere because it is a very valuable technique. The idea is that you are highly constricted in your movement and this forces you to paint in a very simplistic fashion. The effects, though, can be quite astounding. Yet another way to hold the brush as you are learning how to watercolor paint is the conductor hold. Think of yourself standing in front of an orchestra holding the conductor's baton. Hold the brush in the exactly the same way as the conductor would hold the baton. You grip it right at the tip of the taper. This is a fantastic technique as it allows the weight of the brush to have an impact on what you are doing. Again, this will give you a completely different feel to the previous grips. You will need to practise with balance but you should find that this is a pleasant and enjoyable grip. In fact, it is vey good one for watercolor sketching in the open air.
