The relationship between the businessman and a consumer is fragile. If the consumer tends to doubt the businessman and its product the consumer will not approach or purchase from the buyer, thus putting a strain on the businessman’s business. The cycle continues when the businessman’s business does not go well and cannot hire consumers to make the product.

Advertising has become vital for the sale of any item or service. If there is any problems with your ads or if your competitor blemishes your products reputation, you are in trouble. Like I stated earlier, the relationship is fragile. If the consumer looses trust in the product, they are not likely to purchase it. The worst is when competitors play dirty and puts a negative spin on your product without any reasons.

An ad or a forum post on a forum can pose devastating effect. If people read it, it will stay in their heads. Most people have a tendency to remember the negative and not the positive. How can a consumer invest in your product if it does not believe in it? A simple example can be a post from a competitor who uses local community message board to trash your product. Alternatively it can be a pop up stating bogus facts that aren’t verified. If it seen everywhere people will assume it has truth in it.

There are many ways you can counter your competitor’s moves. There is a new trend called reputation management.

You can tell them that you can take them to court if they do not remove the false advertising. If that does not work you may also use Search Engine optimization which is often used to put your website on the top of the result page when someone searched for you.

In order to do that you must find out where your competitors page lies. After you have found it, you know your objective is to be a higher ranking page. Write favorable reviews on your site. Have people review on their own sites. You can ask people to review your products on their blog. Don’t be afraid to use social networking website giants like Facebook where you can create a fan page for your product. Maybe you can have a MySpace page with links and frequent updates about your company that will attract attention. You can also put in positive words for your products in there. Create websites where you can promote your website. Make a dozen of those. This is essentially what reputation management is; rebuilding your reputation.

You can utilize RSS feeds to get rid of the negative attention. Make friends with a few forums members and the influential people in them. They might let you put ads within their message board. Reputation management has many more ways to help boost your site. You can create YouTube videos, post them on Diggs. Go on traffic exchange website where for every website you surf, they will advertise another. The most important thing is, to get on top of your competitors page.

Once you have completed the rehabilitation part of reputation management, you need to make sure you stay on top.
