How to Sell on eBay

By: Robert Chenery

Are you looking for some extra cash? Have you thought about selling all your unwanted bits and pieces around the house or maybe you have unwanted presents that are still new in their box. These little gems could bring in that much wanted extra money if you sold them on eBay.

Now I can hear you thinking how do I do this I am not sure how to go about selling on eBay. Well I can tell you that it is not as hard as you think. All you need is a computer, an internet connection (dial up will do but broadband is better), an email address and it would be useful to have a printer.

All it takes is a little bit of time to get yourself familiar with the eBay website; it is a good idea to buy a few items first to give you a feel of how eBay works. Once you get your confidence up buying as well as getting some positive feedback why not try to sell a few unwanted items around your home to help make ends meet. There is a real buzz watching other people bidding on your items. It really is quite exciting watching as the price is bid up higher and higher towards the end of the auction.

When you are selling your items you need to make sure that your auction is really eye catching to your prospective buyers. Be as clear as you can in your auction descriptions. Include as much detail as you can about your item. Also including pictures is an excellent idea so that your prospective buyer can see exactly what they are bidding on.

Having caught the eBay bug and once you have sold all those unwanted things around your home, why not take a walk around your local boot fair or garage sale to try and find good items to sell. You could also take a walk around your local charity shops to look for bargains to sell. However this way of finding bargains can become quite tiring as there are a lot of other people trying to do the same thing. What I suggest you try and do is start to look around on eBay to see what is selling well. Why not check out 'eBay Pulse' at http://pulse.ebay.co.uk or eBay's top 500 sellers at http://www.nortica.com/UserArea/ebay500_15.asp these can give you some really good ideas.

When you have found a product you would like to sell you then need to look around for wholesale companies or manufacturers that can supply you with these products. Have you thought about setting up a home-based business? Well with eBay you may just come across that unexpected product that sells exceptionally well and this could now be the start of a home-based business. I will say this; if you are going to go down this route then I suggest you contact the Inland Revenue to find out what you have to do for taxation purposes.

The other thing that you need to consider when getting started on eBay is the postage and packaging of your items, this can eat into your profits if you don't allow for these costs. The costs involved in packaging are items such as bubble wrap, boxes and tape etc. If you are unsure how much it would cost to post your item I would suggest you go to your local post office and ask them for the price. They may even have a leaflet with their postal rates on it that you could have. When you are putting in the postage and packaging cost for your auction make sure you take everything into consideration.

Instead of hearing about others earning an extra income, why not grab the bull by the horns and start trading on eBay today!
