Hypnosis and the Sporting Life

By: Steve Tallamy

Somebody asked me the other day whether hypnosis could make him a better football (soccer) player than his brother. Tricky, but not impossible to answer. Obviously it depended on their differing abilities and physical and mental attributes at the present time. But provided there was not a vast gulf between them, then yes would have to be my answer.

Hypnosis can and will heighten your ability to concentrate, stay focused, increase your awareness, build self-esteem and overcome fears and anxieties. How great a person could you become in any walk of life let alone football if you had all of those traits going for you?

Just think for a moment about playing a sport you love but are politely putting it, not exactly brilliant at. I am sure you can think of one or maybe two, I know I can. We are going to use the things I mentioned earlier, the things hypnosis can give you, and apply them to your chosen sport and this is where you will have to bear with me because I obviously do not know which sport it is you have chosen to visualize playing.

As I started this article on the subject of football that is what I will be using as my visualization, but of course if you have selected a different sport then you will have to adapt my words to suit.

So let us start with increased awareness, this will give a better overall picture of what is going on around you in the game, where to position yourself to receive the ball from a team mate or intercept it from an opponent. You will anticipate play better, not run around like a headless chicken getting exhausted after five minutes or so.

Next is building your self-esteem. You believe in yourself and your ability to be able to play well, have the confidence to express yourself and have fun at the same time. Remember that the more enjoyable it becomes the easier it is take that great feeling on with you into the next training session or game.

Overcoming fears and anxieties is a big one. If you suffer from those then you just will not get onto the pitch, hiding instead inside the changing rooms feeling sorry for yourself and hoping and praying that you are not called to go on and take that vital match winning penalty.

Do you see how this sporting analogy explains how hypnosis can be such an important component in your life regardless of what it is you are trying to achieve that it should be the first name on your team sheet every time you play the game of life.
