Before becoming an online entrepreneur, I can remember looking at search engine pages and wonder which government agency put this all together. Who in government did these people have to contact in order to advertise their business, or publish their sites? And just where was the super computer that make this thing humm? To me it seemed to be one of the few things government actually did well. 
It was no real surprise when I found out the reason the government did so well with the Internet. Apparently very few in government, well except for Al Gore, had anything to do with it. Turned out it was good old fashioned private sector ingenuity and free enterprise that drove the process.

What is internet, or search engine marketing? They are catch-all terms that refer to all the different ways you can market a site on the search engines. For ease, we will just say search engine marketing.

If you have a product, or best online business opportunity you would like to market on the internet, you need a website. If you have website, you need search engine marketing to get customers. In the world of online marketing, search engine marketing is a very broad term that encompasses a wide variety of methods.

When it comes to search engine marketing, there is a wide variety of ways to generate traffic.
Traffic simply refers to the people (potential team members or customers) visiting your site that was displayed on one of the pages resulting from a search engine keyword inquiry. You want as much traffic as possible coming to your site. With search engine marketing, there are two broad types of traffic generation methods. Paid traffic generation, and organic traffic generation.

Paid Traffic Generation includes any advertising you do to drive traffic to your site that you have to pay for. The most common methods include buying leads, placing ads, and pay-per-click advertising. All of these methods have been used, in making many entrepreneurs very successful and rich. 
However, these methods are also very costly, and more often than not, they can easily result in business owners paying more for advertising than their earnings. They end up out of business before they start earning. Additionally, the traffic stops once the money for advertising is gone. 

The risk can be very high! I know of entrepreneurs who only had budgeted several hundred dollars per month for advertising, but who got a monthly bill that was in the thousands of dollars from the search engine companies, for a single pay per click campaign.
Organic Traffic Generation includes methods you use to generate traffic outside of Paid Traffic Generation. These include SEO (Search Engine Optimization), social marketing methods, and article writing and blogging.

With “SEO”, the goal is to get your site ranked in the top 10 in the search results (typically the number of sites which show up on Page 1 from a search) for specific keywords or key word phrases. The rankings are based on the relevance of the content of your site in relation to the information people on the Internet are looking for. Your content has to be relevant to the keywords or keyword phrases being entered for searches. 
A keyword, or a keyword phase is simply the word, or words someone looking on a search engine types in as there search subject. An example of a keyword is “Wealth”. An example of a keyword Phrase is “Best Online Business Opportunities”.

With SEO, all the clicks you then receive are free, which maximized your return on investment. The downside to SEO is it takes time to get those top rankings.
Blogging and Article marketing are the newer weapons in the organic traffic generation strategy. 

With this approach, you write articles or make Blog entries for your site and submit or link them to other sites, or to clearing house sites known as directories. Webmasters for other sites can then use them as long as they also publish an author byline, including your name and a link to your site. When the article is published on other sites, or your Blogs are linked, people start clicking on your links giving you traffic need to make more money online.

Organic Traffic Generation is by far the most effective search engine marketing strategy. Once you obtain top rankings, you can receive more traffic than you would from a paid traffic generation pay-per-click campaign, and it is all free! 

Organic traffic generation is the gift that keeps on giving. Work you do now can keep producing results several years from now, minimizing how much you will have to spend on paid traffic generation.

The downside of organic traffic generation through SEO, social networking, article writing and blogging is that it takes a lot of time and work.

The Best of Both Worlds
For most sites, both paid and organic traffic generation methods must be used. The best strategy is to start immediately developing an organic traffic generation campaign as there is a pipeline effect that can take several months of work before showing result. You will likely use paid traffic generation campaigns, while waiting for the organic campaign to provide the level of traffic you desire. 

Unless you have many months, or even years and multiple thousands of dollars to spend implementing these traffic generation strategies, you need a good marketing system and a knowledgeable mentor to start you on your direct path to success.
