Insomnia Help--Three Things You Can Do Tonight

By: Phil Tsang

Are you suffering from poor quality, unsatisfying sleep? Not being able to sleep at night can make it very difficult to get through your day. After just a few nights of insomnia, the symptoms of sleep deprivation begin to set in. At this point, people are willing to do almost anything to get insomnia help. The good news is that it's possible to help yourself. By changing your habits, changing your bedroom and changing the way you think about sleep, you can transform insomnia into a distant memory.

The first step in removing insomnia from your life is to change your habits. You should reduce or eliminate caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and will keep your brain awake long past its bedtime. Alcohol is a little sneakier. As your body processes alcohol, it produces byproducts that will wake you up a few hours after you go to sleep. New habits you can use to fight insomnia include starting a program of regular exercise and lightening up on any late night eating.

The next step to improve your sleep is to change your bedroom. Notice I didn't say move to another bedroom, but rather transform your current bedroom into a better sleeping environment. Start by making it darker. You may need heavy curtains, new blinds or different lighting. You should also do whatever it takes to reduce noise in your bedroom. If you can't get rid of noise completely, then mask what remains with a fan or a white noise generator. Also, make your bedroom a haven devoted to sleeping or intimate activities only.

Another thing you may need to try has a complicated name, but it's a simple solution. Sleep experts refer to it as cognitive behavior therapy, but it's really just changing the way you think about sleep. For example, reprogramming your brain to sleep on schedule may require you to stick to a regular bedtime and get up at the same time each morning.

In most cases, these basic changes will provide all the insomnia help you need. By changing your habits, changing her bedroom and changing the way you think about sleep, you can radically improve your rest each night.
