SPDIF
Sony/Philips Digital Interface (SPDIF) is an audio digital flat form transfers that is noise proof. It is very popular for high quality music production and commonly used by most professionals in the audio industry.

Internal SPDIF
The operations of SPDIF is explained in our regular CD-ROM. When we play audio CD, the CD drive converts the data from standard digital format to analogue audio form. The analogue forms of the audio travels and is directed to the sound card through fitting cables.

Analogue transmission explained above is vulnerable to noise and other discrepancies that can alter the quality of the audio. The quality of the CD-ROM's audio converter and the cables used for the audio transmission are a few factors to be considered in securing a high quality audio conversion.

SPDIF was developed to resolve issues on audio transmission vulnerabilities. Assuming that your soundcard has a SPDIF input that you can connect to your CD-ROM's SPDIF output using a cable connection. This set-up would provide means for digital analogue conversion to process on the sound card instead inside of a CD-ROM, which is prone to many inconsistencies.

External SPDIF
SPDIF connection is also possible amongst DVD players, CD players, Mini discs and other digital equipments. The ability of SPDIF connection to eliminate noise interference made it the top of the line type of connection.

There are 2 main types of SPDIF connection popularly used. The optical SPDIF and the coaxial SPDIF. This two connection differ in their cable connector composition.

Optical SPDIF is initially secured by a covering, which is removed during installation and is made-up of optical fibers. Coaxial on the other hand is made up of coaxial cable.

Coaxial and optical can both perform at the same speed and quality. Choosing coaxial or optical SPDIF depends on the user’s preferred digital device to connect.

SPDIF technology has long been introduced t many computers and devices though only few users are able to benefit fro it due to lack of information on how to use it. It is always best to check on your device's manual to confirm SPDIF functionality.
