Is Divorce a Leap in the Dark?

By: Jim Walsh

Alas, life can be very complicated. Things do not always turn out to be as anticipated. At times one is faced with situations that were not previously thought of. The ‘sight for sore eyes’ may start to look like an eyesore! In such a scenario, there may be no other alternative than to go in for a divorce.

Marriage is a turning point in the life of every person. It divides his or her life into two entirely different halves – pre marriage and post marriage. Similarly, divorce is an equally strong turning point in his or her life. As opposed to marriage, which is full of joy, divorce can be full of sorrow.

In a bad marriage, divorce in the final nail in the coffin. It may seem that divorce is synonymous with liberation from a painful married life. Nevertheless one must keep in mind that even this liberation is from a bond that was meant to be happy and long lasting.

Divorce is the end of a dream. It does not matter how strong or weak an individual is emotionally; a separation by the means of divorce is still a painful experience. While marriage is a well thought out episode, a divorce need not be so. Even if one has thought out all the pros and cons of divorce, one may still be ill prepared to face its consequences. Let’s examine the various repercussions of divorce.

Finances

One may not realize the implications of finance without the support of a spouse. If there are children, then how will they be educated? All things that were previously taken care of automatically may now seem to be a burden. It may be that even the next meal becomes a question mark.

Generally, in a marriage, the finances are held jointly by both individuals. They divide the responsibilities of all financial aspects amongst themselves. A severing of ties with the spouse might leave one at a complete loss of words on how to handle the situation. If the person also holds the custody of children then the problem can become magnified.

Accommodation

In marriage certain things are taken for granted. One of them is the roof over one’s head. After divorce and the division of assets, this too may come under question. One may find to his or her dismay that the house no longer belongs to him or her.

In exceptional cases where the duo concerned is financially well off and has multiple assets this may not be the case. Unfortunately not all couples are very well to do. In most, average cases, there is a single roof over the head. Either one or both the spouses may have paid the mortgage for the same. During the division of assets the court will tilt towards the spouse whose need it feels is greater than that of the other partner.

Children

The most painful issue might invariably turn out to be the custody of children. No one ever imagines that he or she might one day have to part ways with his or her children. As it is, divorce is a parting of ways from one’s spouse; to add to the miseries, there’s parting with children – which is bound to compound the pain involved.

If the spouse who has the custody of the children remarries then it can cause even greater heartache to the other. This pain may be increased exorbitantly if the custodial spouse decides to relocate to a new city or a separate country altogether. This way the other spouse will be denied all meaningful contact with his or her children.

All these aspects make it appear as if divorce is a leap in the dark. There are too many questions, which have to be addressed. Unfortunately the answers are limited if any at all. One does not know what turn life is going to take. Just as marriage is a leap into a life full of promises, divorce is a leap into uncertainty.
