LED Bulbs - Create The Light Impression

LED bulbs offer a far more diverse range of lighting solutions than halogen, filament or fluorescent lighting, and as LED light bulbs cost far less to run, they represent an economical solution as well as an aesthetic one. With more versatility and flexibility, creating the right effect, the right mood and the right impression is easier and more exciting with LED bulbs, offering a safer, more environmentally friendly solution at the same time!

With filament bulbs there have really only ever been two ways in which it has been possible to change the colour or shade of the light. Either buy a bulb which has been covered with a coloured film, or use a coloured lightshade. Neither works terribly well, with filament bulbs only available in two or three basic colours, and lamp shades only offering limited colour or mood effects. Not only that, but as filament bulbs reach very high temperatures, the coloured film often cracks and flakes, resulting in a patchy effect. LED lights are manufactured in such a way that a very wide range of colours and effects are possible, with almost any shade available.

This means that it is possible to create very customised lighting effects, helping to create a very personal and distinct atmosphere or mood to a room. For example, whilst normal daylight is pleasant, within a house you will often find that warmer or cooler shades of lighting can create a welcome effect. In the kitchen, for example, cool, crisp lighting helps to generate a cleaner, more clinical impression, giving food a natural, fresh appearance, and giving the entire room a feeling of crisp, clean freshness. A similar effect can be achieved in a bathroom.

But in other rooms, such as living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms you may prefer to create a warmer, more relaxed atmosphere. Warmer shades of lighting can create an atmosphere which is warm, cosy and calming. But how can LED light bulbs create warmer or cooler shades? Surely white light is just white light? In fact, the trick is to use a very wide range of subtly different shades. White light, or natural sunlight, can be considered neutral. By adding a slight shading of reds and oranges, the light can feel pleasantly warm and relaxing, without any real clue as to how the effect is achieved. Similarly, by creating LED light bulbs which have a subtle shade of blue or green incorporated into them, a crisper, cleaner mood can be sensed. The actual colouring is subtle enough to be indiscernible, but the effect is very noticeable, and can make each room of your house distinctly individual.

There is another benefit to using LED lighting, and this comes as a result of its ability to be focussed. Traditional filament bulbs simply radiate light in a complete 360 degree radius. This means that half your light is being directed against a wall, or the ceiling, and only a small proportion of it is being directed to where it is actually needed. LED bulbs are available in a range of styles, with some creating a very tightly focussed spotlight effect, and others a wider cone of light. By using the right kind of LED bulb it is possible to create a lighting arrangement which means that all of the light is directed exactly where it’s needed, with none being wasted. If you are working in a kitchen you will often need lights directed at the work surfaces. If you use filament, halogen or CFL bulbs then you will very likely have had to use extra powerful bulbs, or use several and overlap them, just to create enough light for you to prepare food by.

Instead, by using highly directional, highly focussed, bright LEDs you can ensure that you can see to prepare food very much more clearly, using far fewer bulbs and paying very much less for your electricity. Increased convenience and a decreased cost - it is possible, so it seems, to have the best of both worlds! The fact that LED bulbs are very much more environmentally friendly and safer for use in the home only adds to the catalogue of benefits and advantages in using LED light bulbs compared to alternative lighting solutions.

Another benefit many people have found derives from the fact that LED bulbs generate very little heat. In cupboards and small rooms such as cellars and larders many people have found that a bright filament or halogen bulb generates so much heat that it can be dangerous. Often in these rooms and spaces your head is quite close to the light source, and this can be uncomfortable, disconcerting and potentially dangerous. Having a fiercely hot ball of glass containing toxic chemicals and the potential to shatter just inches from your face is not a pleasant experience! instead, by using safe, relatively cool LED bulbs it is possible to provide bright illumination, focussed and directed right where you need, without the danger. Flexible, versatile and safe - LED light bulbs make the future of household lighting look bright!
