Have you finally decided that you want to create something extra that you have seen on a large number of other sites? What I’m talking about in this case is a sitemap. You may have been surfing around the web and have always noticed that other websites have something usually toward the bottom called a sitemap.

You may have found yourself clicking on the sitemap link and were then looking at what appeared to be a bunch of simple lined up anchored text that showed you the pages that were on the website. You were most likely able to find the place you were looking for because of the fact that you didn’t have to wade in the muck of all of the many busy informational ads and marketing that are usually on a website these days. It’s very rare that you would find yourself at a website that is simple and has only links just like craigslist does.

So, you may find yourself ready to take this basic leap into having a sitemap at your own website. Even if you have dropdown menus all over the place on the top or either side, you still need to create a page that is just for links for showing the different pages of your site. I just want to give you a nice brief rundown of what you should have as a list of things to think about when taking this journey. These items will help you and your website to become more and more optimized for the lovely search engines who love nothing more that anchored text that is relevant to your and their needs so that an index can be compiled.

1.The first thing that you want to always keep in the front of your mind while doing everything else is to make sure that you keep the new sitemap page the most simplest page out of all of the pages that your entire website has. This is just a great way to keep the search engines and your visitors happy. Also, the whole point of having a sitemap in the first place is to make sure that you have an extremely simple index of what others want to see.
2. When creating the link to the sitemap page, you will want to keep the name “sitemap” as your clickable text no matter what. This way you will never confuse anyone who is looking for it. It’s almost like a unwritten universal and understood rule that all websites maintain the name “sitemap” so that others will be able to more easily find it for faster navigation.
3. It is always helpful to give a description about what each text link is all about and what the visitor can expect to find when they get to that place.
4. You will want to make sure that the “sitemap” link is placed on every single webpage that you have. This way, no matter where the visitor is when they decide that they want to have a map of your site, they will easily be able to find one.
5. Make sure that the “sitemap” link is going to be in a place where it will be easily seen and the visitor will not be struggling and become frustrated and end up leaving your website.

This article talks about some of the basic importance of why it is such a good idea to have a sitemap and what are good ideas to keep in mind when creating or updating one that you already have.

Many times you may not be updating your sitemap as you update the categories to your site itself. Whenever you have a process of adding a new category or subcategory, you will want to make sure that this is on the list of things to do.
