Learning to Play the Flute

By: Pamelina Siow Click author's name for more of his/her articles

Begin your lesson by standing in front of the mirror to see if you're holding the flute right

Take the head joint and holding it in a particular position in your hand try to place your lip on the broader end of the embouchure, try to cover the end of the head joint that is open and start blowing across the hole.

You have achieved what you wanted if only you get a low airy sound Assess the total length of the flute, as it will help you to line up the keys in a proper way.

Usually the assessment is done from the top of the head joint to the base of the flute. The rod that moves downward till the bottom of the foot joint should be placed in a straight line with the center of the keys that are present on the body.

As the foot joint necessitates the pinky finger to be used it doesn't have a requirement for the keys to be in line with the keys of the body of the flute.

The left thumb will have to be placed on the key that bears a shape of a triangle and is situated on the back of the flute. Index finger should be placed on the small key located at the front.

Leave the next key and depress the following keys with your second and third fingers on them. And lastly, the pinky will have to be placed on the lever that can be found on the exterior part of the body of the flute.

Use your right thumb to hold the flute firmly under the flute so that your index, middle and ring fingers can do their work on the front consecutive keys of the body of the flute. Normally the right pinky is placed on the key that is shaped somewhat like a semi-circle at the bottom of the body of the flute. To begin with these things will be quite tough and uncomfortable to follow.

Strive to remove any stress from your throat, mouth and fingers. You cannot make smooth and even sounding renditions if you are full of stress and tension. Let go of all uneasiness before you play.

Use your fingers namely the left hand and right hand thumb, left hand index finger and the right hand index finger to depress the respective keys and place the flute near your mouth and star to blow to compose your desirable sound outputs.

After knowing the exact rate of air that will help you formulate the sound note, one would basically find it to be a low- B flat, which is third line on the treble staff, or a high B-flat that is present at a place above the treble staff.

Take more days to practice, as you will never be satisfactory with the low B-flat until you really work on it effectively.

Practice using the original B-flat first before moving on to the more advanced stages. Be sure that you are using the fingering chart from a proper guidebook. Pay attention to each and every note, take care so that the output is identical to that of the books, and once if you are confident about your playing skills, try playing a high original 'B flat and repeat this until you achieve perfection.

At this stage you should have got the basic awareness of what kind of musical instrument a flute is and how you can play it actually.

Irrespective of the mode of your learning be it through lesson books or through a formal instructor you may learn the necessary skills that helps you play flute with ease. Normally people choose proficient experts to teach them seeing that under those professionals the beginner can learn what are all the basic Don'ts and the obligatory Do's, learning which you can have fun on your own and enjoy!
