Pick up a tool or a knife and most likely you will see its trademark; Leatherman. This brand has been around since the eighties and the quality of its products are so high in quality that many people prefer the brand over the others. But it is perhaps in its line of multi tools that the company came to be famous for. It is also in its line of knife products that the company received recognition many years later. Officially, the company is known as the Leatherman Tool Group which was founded by Timothy S. Leatherman, to sell a tool of his creation way back in 1983. He was a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University. It is said that the idea of a multitool was first conceived by Leatherman during a touring drive on Europe. Unable to fix his car with a pocket knife, he thought of making a Boy Scout knife combined with a pair of pliers.

Obsessed with the idea, he developed his idea and was rewarded with a patent in 1980. He first attempted to sell his refined sales edition of the multitool to large companies which he expects to patronize his products. He failed in this endeavor but was able to get a marketing advice from a catalog company to simplify his rather complicated tool. It was with this innovation that Leatherman was able to get substantial sales which were done through mail order companies.

The company began its manufacturing expansion in 1996 to three times its size of thirty thousand square feet two years earlier. Eleven years later, the founder was inducted in the Cutlery Hall of Fame as recognition by Blade Magazine of the impact his creations have made in the industry.

A multitool made by the company is basically a pair of pliers with other essential repair tools attached to it. These tool attachments usually include a knife, a screwdriver, a small saw and other similar tools. There are models with only five or six tools combined while other expanded models may have as twenty tool combinations. Their size range from a midget tool that is smaller than a Swiss knife to large, bulky Leatherman tools which could weigh around one third of a kilogram.

Today, the company is a producer of top of the line utility tools and accessories. In addition, it has begun to make more personalized versions of its multitool. By commissioning craft artists, it was able to produce a multitool with intricate designs. This are sold for a much higher price, but considering its artistic and luxurious value, the price is worth paying for. Leatherman is also now not just exclusive in North America.
