Liposuction and Tummy Tuck

Typically, patients whose abdominal area has loose excess skin, or significant stretch marks will need a tummy tuck and will not benefit from liposuction alone. This is because liposuction is a procedure that only removes fat. Skin is esentially unaffected. Therefore if there is substantial loose skin or stretch marks to start with, liposuction will not remove any of the extra skin or any of the stretch mark-bearing skin.

It reduces the normal sagging that is part of the aging process. For women, childbearing can accelerate this sagging. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin which loses its original elasticity. A tummy tuck can get your tummy closer to a youthful, flat state. For many, this provides not only a physical lift, but a mental lift as well. The results can be dramatic.

Due to the major nature of the tummy tuck surgery, there are substantial risks involved. There are risks associated with surgical complications and also risks tied to the anesthetics. Therefore, a tummy tuck could become a real option only if you need to lose weight and get rid of a lot of excess skin – as in the case of losing a lot of weight rapidly. The liposuction is usually a less traumatic option if your weight loss requirement is not as drastic.

The argument for having this surgery is that some people have a big belly and “love handles” that they can’t seem to get rid of no matter what regime of exercise and weight loss they go through. This seems to be a particular problem of women after several pregnancies. People planning to have this surgery should wait until their pregnancies are finished, or in the case of men or women, until after they have exhausted all attempts at major weight loss.

Some benefits to having a mini tummy tuck compared to a full tummy tuck is that you will have a shorter scar and there will be no incision around the navel. Mini tummy tuck surgery is something between endoscopic abdominoplasy and dermolipectomy. It is a procedure that is typically performed while you are under a local anesthesia, although there is a chance that a general anesthesia will be used. You can ask your doctor about what type of anesthesia they will be using.

If you are in the market for a tummy tuck you should find out which procedure would be good for you. Any reputable doctor will be happier to do the least invasive procedure on you which would be liposuction. When you are looking for a surgeon be sure to ask questions and find someone who has a good reputation.

A tummy tuck should not be taken lightly because it is major surgery. When you are meeting with your surgeon you should be able to ask them any question you want to and they should be very willing to answer anything. Be sure to ask for before and after pictures of previous patients. Also check their credentials and their references.

Liposuction to remove excess fat from the abodomen cannot tighten the skin or muscles, and tummy tuck may therefore be a more appropriate option when the skin lost its elasticity and when the muscles of the lower abdomen need to be tightened. The skin in the lower abdomen may become stretched for a variety of reasons.
